I've done both system dumps and full partition dumps on out-of-the-box Moto devices, for comparison to the firmware packages offered on this thread. I've never found the slightest difference. I've compared the OS (/system) itself, the radio firmware, bootloaders, kernel/ramdisk, and stock recoveries. I've found absolutely no difference.

How ?

I have too been doing it to everything you can imagine since 2000 roughly
and i use Beyond Compare / hex compare mode to check firmware.

1 single byte matters ;)

Right on. I agree. I haven't used Beyond Compare. Is it freeware or open source?

Well to be honest i am using a pirated version of the trial software right now.
I was gonna buy it before but i forgot LOL
It's one of the few programs i would easily say is worth buying.
I believe they have a linux version too.

Cool. Thanks for the info. I'll check the torrent sires for a working pre-licensed copy. Also, excellent work on your flashable boot logos for Moto devices. Always looking forward to updates from you on those.

Thank you and watch out for anti-piracy stuff here.. the staff will be all over you about it.
I had planned to use Bitcoin to pay the dev but forgot about it then spent my BTC.
I will get around to it eventually.. Beyond Compare is a great program for comparing in files or folder full of them with different view modes & filters.
When i compare firmware packages with it i usually open up filters then uncheck the box for timestamps.
That is after you use the context menu to select one extracted folder and then another.

Thanks for the Bootlogo comment too.
What i was most proud of on that was the Bootloader screen changes.
My new buttons on them made it easier to use i think.
It's easy for users to get Motobootlogomaker then just change my main Background and save it.

I also still have not seen the updated Marshmallow firmware packages anywhere. :(

Yes. Anti-piracy is much stricter everywhere these days. I meant that I was going to get a copy and buy a license (wink wink). Thank you for the reminder. Out of curiosity, what is your theory on the origin of these firmware packages? They seem to be purely Motorola/Lenovo compiled packages, except for your observance regarding no digital signatures. Very odd indeed

Go to the first topic and read..
You have the links there and your phone model.
I don't know why so many people ask for links when the entire point here is to get them from the first post.

Not trying to be a jerk but if you guys can't figure out that basic concept do you really think you should be flashing phones ?

You know the rule right? If you want to hide something somewhere where no one will ever find it put a labeled link to it in the OP of an XDA thread.

can we flash backwards from 5.1 to 5.0? i know that on samsung phones that this is feasible. i was thinking that kingroot might be able to root this puppy on 5.0. not working too well on 5.1

thanks

xt 1528. verizon moto e prepaid.
I think there was a way to go back to 5.0 iirc, the VZW guys were doing that to keep an older modem version or something, I think. Don't really know where to point you for more information though - digging through older threads is your best bet. I've been mostly just skimming this community for a while now. Too busy with other stuff, and my xt1526 is a backup to a backup now.

You will find the xt1524 stock Android 6.0 firmware you need here. Use the retes package - Build No. MPI24.65-39. Yes you can upgrade to Android 6.0 without losing userdata. Simply avoid a fastboot erase userdata command when flashing the package.

XT1524 models are officially updated to android 6, so you can check for update in Settings->About Phone->Software Updates.
You can download file starting with "XT1524_SURNIA_RETEU_6.0" and install manually the update. Flashing a new firmware is always a risk for losing data and installed apps.
I recommend doing a back-up.

Thanks for your help but now I'm not sure if I should download RETES or RETEU...
Use the RETES firmware. As long as you are not executing a command to the /userdata partition, there is absolutely no chance of losing any data. Simply not possible. That would be like me saying you could corrupt your bootloader from flashing the /modem partition. You can't affect what you don't touch. Take that from somebody who works for Motorola Mobility LLC. But a backup should always be standard operating procedure. Never leave home without it.
Also, just so you know, not sure the route you're wanting to go, but I can hook you up with a TWRP flashable stock Android 6.0 ROM for the xt1524. Of course, you would need to unlock your bootloader first (which does wipe your data due to a forced factory data reset)) and install TWRP custom recovery. Let me know.
