This method works on Oxygen OS Oreo ( Stable 5 and beta 19/29 ) are confirmed to be working. This currently only works on rear camera and only if the subject is a human or a pet. Also HDR + works without any issues.
Steps -
1. Download this apk.

2. If you already have a conflicting app installed, first uunistall t then install this to be on the safe side.
3. Open the app, set the proper config and done.
( I'll later share the video showinf everything step by step and the best configuration too. )
Just a heads up that I can't upload a sample picture of portrait mode as I don't want to reveal my identity here but after trying it in a bunch of situations I found out that it works alomst as good as the original pixel 2 but only for human subjects, i.e you need to have human face in the viewfinder.
Configuration -

P.S - I'm not the developer of the app, in this thread I just intend to share the version that works best for me along with a configuration.

For AR stickers ( confirmed working on OP3T OB20 only)
Download and install the modified ar apps and then flash this zip in recovery.

After testing with many subjects in bright lighting, portrait mode works only with Humans and sometimes pets as mentioned in OP. Does not work with objects.
Face Retouching works.
HDR+ works
60FPS recording works
Slow-mo still broken
AR stickers works.

AR stickers works only if you are having root access right? With some ADB tweaks?

@Nemuritor01 seems like that post is not even talking about portrait mode. So from a noob user here they don't look like they have the same content.
It's the same. But you have to read through the posts. Arnova is the dev of this mod. His work is based on BSG gcam Port. Last gcam version 1.4 has portrait mode. Just enable it in the advanced settings in the app. As I've mentioned... Read through the thread

Nope, no tweaks. Just two APK's (ARCORE and AR Stickers) and a flashable zip.

I didn't change any settings in the app, and it processes fine (portrait mode).

You are on Oreo? I'm on stock rooted OOS 5.0.

@Kartike AR Stickers work on NOS 8.1 / Omni 8.1 and LineageOS 15.1 . I've tested it myself on the mentioned ROMs, and they work.

Since NOS 8.1 's stock Kernel is configured to underclock the Big Cluster Cores to 1500MHz, there will be a very noticeable lag when placing AR Stickers and when moving around with them placed.

Fix: Flash Caesium Kernel version SensuousSaspodillas and make sure your Big Cluster is clocked to stock speeds. This will fix 90% of the lag.

Tip: If you're on OB/Stock, flash ElementalX Kernel and Overclock your processor to 2.2-2.3GHz and the AR sticker lag will be gone. I am not responsible for any mishap that happens from the overclock, but I've done it and there is no noticeable battery life reduction or performance degradation.

    EDIT: @Kartike here's the flashable file for the 3;
