I think they just killed the keyboard, I didn't see anything resembling a front side module in that presentation...

Wired have published a piece denoting that Project Ara will not be as customisable as originally intended:
Original article: http://www.wired.com/2016/05/project...hone-is-ready/
XDA analysis: http://www.xda-developers.com/projec...closer-to-you/

So is a keyboard still possible? Vertically or horizontally?

OK, Mr. doom and gloom.

I'm just as upset at the loss of full modular support, but that doesn't mean that workarounds aren't possible.

So they killed off custom processors and RAM? What if a third party is still able to make modules and we're able to override that with kernel access?

And I'm not entirely convinced yet that a keyboard module is impossible with this design. It might take some very clever design to implement.

Check out the pictures from the CNET article. A module that snaps into the big bottom slot might be able to extend out farther and be your horizontal keyboard slider.

If everybody poo-poo's the first edition and never gives it a chance, we may never see another modular phone which would be a huge loss in my eyes. I'd rather have a crappy first generation that needs a lot of hacks and workarounds than none at all.

There is now a campaign on indiegogo for a keyboard mod for Moto Z (Z has detachable rear addons, using the Linux greybus system developed for Ara).
