    Yes, settings -> backup & restore -> reset device helps. Yes, usb gets disconnected during process. Could be virtually anything but usually its port - cable - etc failure. If this happens, install custom recovery and root device that way.

    for M7, yes Yes, Linux is required, download ubuntu 12.xx or 13.04. Other distros may work also. Live-usb may cause some headaches so use live-cd or full installation. So far everything what we tested is working.

    hboot is one of the bootloaders, but its not causing bricks here. Device enters into hboot when everything is ok. Yes, everything what boots BEFORE hboot (- PBL of course ) must be from same build. So, SBLs (like you said) + RPM fw + trustzone.

    radio + bootloaders. In this case only bootloaders matters. Bootloader mismatch after flashing OTA firmware on top of the old firmware is causing these bricks. Long story short, device crashes during boot-sequence.
