You're right about needing OS 5.1.2. To get into recovery, turn off device, hold down power and volume+ until you see amazon logo and then let go OR plug into PC with adb drivers installed and type: adb reboot recovery

How'd I get rooted 5.1.2.1? Hey, just discovered I'm running rooted OS 5.1.2.1 ! :D See attachment. Can someone explain how this could happen? I've been doing A LOT of testing and can't tell all that I might have changed. Here's what I know: I did unblock (and forget to reblock)...

Android will let you do this with a file explorer. You need to enable root explorer in the file explorer (or get root explorer app from Play Store). Make a folder in /sdcard and copy the existing files to it for backup. Then delete existing files. Connect with regular USB cable and copy the new...

Post Amazon Fire 5th Gen [SuperTool] Root, Google play install, block ota updates and more

I assume you're rooted. First look for NovaLauncher_4.2.0.apk at bottom of /system/priv-app. If it's there, use file explorer to change permissions to rw- r-- r--. (Long press apk to select it and choose properties to change perms.) If it's not in priv-app, see if it's still in /data/local/tmp/...

You should be able to root and upgrade in TWRP straight to latest release. Ask here to be sure: http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-hd/general/how-to-upgrade-to-lollipop-root-gapps-t3163950. When you root, use the Install Kingroot tool. It'll block OTA update before you root and replace...

Post Unbrick/Restore Amazon Fire (7in 2015 5th Gen) using Stock Recovery's ADB Sideload

You have 5.1.2.1 if build date in device settings>update is March. You need to install drivers for sideload mode. Go into sideload mode (yellow text on tablet), open device manager and install drivers just as you did for system mode. EDIT: NVM. This was cross-posted [tsk tsk] and already answered.

Confirm filename is update-kindle-20.5.4.2_user_542168620.bin and your build date is March 30/31. If both are true, only thing I can guess is that file is corrupted. Try downloading again.

I assume you're on OS 5. Play Store doesn't work on OS 4. I don't know this error message, but here's the standard procedure for fixing errors. Try the Play Store after each one. Let me know how it goes. 1. Reboot 2. In Settings/apps/all apps, scroll to Play Store and force stop then clear...

Post Fire 6 Freezes and is useless

Your understanding of TWRP is right. Basically, we dd the twrp image with OS 4.5.3 bootloaders (the only bootloaders that will boot unsigned recovery) and then before leaving TWRP flash back (almost) current bootloaders and recovery. You should be able to adb-sideload the OS 5.1.2 update to fix...

Are you sure you have OS 5.1.2 installed (build date in device settings=Februrary)? The update file ends in 542168620.bin? OS 5.1.2.1 (unrootable March build 542169020) and OS 5.1.2 are both displayed as "5.1.2" in settings.

Post [Root] OS 4, 5.0.n and Install Lollipop & Gapps ("Newbie Friendly")

You can't put TWRP on OS 5. You just boot it as you need it (1st link). You can load TWRP onto 4.5.3 after you downgrade. Pls read the 1st link and ask bibikalka about this.
  30. D

Post [Root] OS 4, 5.0.n and Install Lollipop & Gapps ("Newbie Friendly")

No, resetting won't downgrade you. Also, AFAIK, you can't downgrade 5.0.1 to 0S 4.5.3 and keep root, but you can downgrade in TWRP if you want. Check with bibikalka here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-hd/general/how-to-upgrade-to-lollipop-root-gapps-t3163950. Alternatively, you can...

Post [ROOT] With Kingroot and Tools + Play Store + Launcher (Newbie Friendly)

Mainly I chose Nova because it's immensely popular. ;) Yes, the tool lets you choose. If you renamed or deleted Firelauncher you'll get a big warning about uninstalling custom launcher with no stock, but it will let you do it since you have another custom launcher.

Well, the apps won't run without those APKs. :D Use the Uninstall Launcher tool to get rid of all Nova, including its apk. No idea where Nova wallpaper is, but would guess in some file where you can't get at them. There are a gazillion wallpapers on play store or the web. Most launchers will...

Post [ROOT] With Kingroot and Tools + Play Store + Launcher (Newbie Friendly)

I'd keep Firelauncher so, if for no other reason, you can upgrade in TWRP. Your launcher in /system/priv-app will be wiped out with an upgrade, so you need either an enabled Firelauncher or a launcher "regularly" installed from Play Store.

5.1.2.1 is fine with tools. I realized after asking that you had to be rooted or tools you used wouldn't have worked You got "No apk in user_launcher folder?" Post [ROOT] With Kingroot and Tools + Play Store + Launcher (Newbie Friendly)

What can I say? This is not your phone, not true Android. On Android you can control default launcher in settings. Not so on Amazon tablets, so we find workarounds. You can see if Google Now settings has the option to "turn off" default, but even if it does that may not make home key give you...

Post [ROOT] With Kingroot and Tools + Play Store + Launcher (Newbie Friendly)

Once a launcher is set as default, the Home key (circle) always takes you to that launcher. Most launchers have an option in launcher settings to turn off default, but in my experience it seldom "releases" the Home key. So . . . Use Block/Unblock and UNBLOCK Amazon, then block it again. You'll...

You only needed (3) "Install Other Launcher" to install Go launcher. These steps should clean things up: 1. Run (6) Block/Unblock tool and UNBLOCK Amazon. Make sure you see the Amazon UI. 2. Reboot and be sure it boots to Amazon 3. Long-press Apex on Home apps and uninstall (or uninstall in...

You can uninstall/delete with something like Titanium backup. That's pretty extreme so please test first. sd_shadow has a good safe-to-remove list. It's for an earlier OS on 2015 Fires, but pretty much everything is the same on Fire HDs. As suggested there, the safest way is to use Titanium...

Launcher has to be installed to /system/priv-app with perm changes for widgets. I believe the SuperTool will do this. So, you could uninstall the Nova you got, then reinstall with the Nova option in SuperTool.
