Run the script as root and you should be fine, tested with Linux Mint 17.2. Not sure if it makes a difference, I made it executable with chmod +x and run as root from my home directory instead of using sh.

Don't know which gapps package you took, but eg these 2, http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/pa-gapps-continuation-t3098071 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/tk-gapps-t3116347, don't support CWM officially, I would suggest you try TWRP instead.

Since I had some troubles with gapps after updating the rom, I wonder if this rom has addon.d backup functionality? Or I had some bad gapps package used (lost gapps settings and most gaaps itself after updating, needed to reflash gapps).

Xt1032 with bootloader 41.18, was also not able to flash nightlies, just tried the gpt.bin and it worked. no hardbrick only some trouble to format data partition with philz recovery as mentioned before (had to try multiple times, don't know what exactly made it work).
