Yes. You can of course back them up first. I used Titanium backup to backup with. But if your phone is not rooted you may not be able to backup everything. There are a number of special apps around the play store that can be used to back up SMS etc.

3G very slow I had this issue until I installed the modem.bin file provided by my carrier. I found the correct modem file on another Android site by searching for the carrier name and modem. Now it is just as fast as ever.
