You can change a value in a file under system, but it is not so safe..

Try to uninstall the google maps and reinstall from the Playstore. Do you have the GSM Galaxy Nexus(Maguro)?

Mine is working perfectly. Try to do a Wipe cache and dalvik cache. If the problem is not gone, try to wipe data/factory reset. ;) :)

Change your rom to CyanogenMod 7.1. That is the smoothest rom while I'm playing :D

I offer you the IceColdSandwich 7.4. That is the best ICS Rom. :D
