Yes very much so. There is presently no root method (or unlock for that matter) that doesnt trip knox. That being said there are levels of tripping knox and this does not brick the phone, but i believe that without magisk hide modules things like android pay will not work.

You cannot write anything to the device without unlocking the bootloader. So yes, 100% of the people doing this have unlocked their bootloader.

We're not Samsung Dev's on this forum, you should be checking with your carrier as they control the updates by region not XDA.

It means you are trying to restore a firmware older than was last run on your phone. You probably updated your phone since it was purchased, meaning you need the newer firmware. You need to look up what the latest release for your model is online and try restoring that.

When i do that it boots to twrp/recovery? Perhaps this is the issue. I'd like to understand the process of booting that way, do you first power on then at the press power screen press up vol and power and hold? If so for how long? I wonder what the heck the holding power up does to make it work.

You now have to have the original image for your phone. Power off, power on while holding vol+ & vol-, then flash the original firmware using odin. Your phone will not OEM lock but twrp will be overwritten and you need to start again.
