has anyone confirmed tether for free after root?

im new to usb phone, all previous have had proprietary connection will any mini(or is it micro) usb cable work? in other words can i get it from a pc shop and save $20 over vzw prices?

the vzw website comparison tool shows ths fascinate as being almost(within thousands of an inch) the same size as the DX. can anyone verify this? i didnt do the x because its just too big.
