Post [PSA] Make a recovery drive before upgrading to Windows RT 8.1

I've never tried. I have a lot of old 4GB USB drives lying around from trade shows, so I'm glad to put one to use.

    Post Anyone Tried USB Ethernet?

Upgrading the Surface RT to Windows 8.1 RT kills the driver for the AX88772 chipset. I just tried it. If you want to keep wired ethernet access, don't upgrade your Surface RT to Windows 8.1.

    Post Anyone Tried USB Ethernet?

It very well could be, as Asix has now pulled that driver from its site. The latest update from Plugable says that Microsoft does not allow third-party drivers for Windows RT: http://plugable.com/2012/10/28/the-windows-rt-and-surface-usb-device-compatibility-story

Post On screen keyboard when Touch Cover is attached??

Yes. Charms -> Settings -> Keyboard When the Keyboard pop-up menu appears, choose Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel. That always brings up the onscreen keyboard, even if an external keyboard is attached and working.

Post well, I killed my surface RT...now how can I restore it...

When I boot up with the USB Recovery Drive, I see something a little different. After selecting the keyboard layout, I see the option, "BitLocker: Enter the recovery key to get going again." At this point, I have to go to http://windows.microsoft.com/recoverykey using one of my "Trusted PCs"...

And from my experience, you also need to do it while the recovery drive is inserted into the USB port. I was expecting to see a prompt asking me to insert the recovery drive, but that prompt never came. Finally, after plugging in the recovery drive, holding down the Volume Down key and pressing...

Post taking photos directly inside word?

There's no way within Word to just punch a button and have a photo snapped and automatically inserted. But if you dock the Camera app next to Word, it's pretty easy to just tap the camera's screen to take a shot. Then, in Word, tap Insert > Pictures and tap the name of the picture you just...

Post Your personal downsides of the SurfaceRT?

The Surface supports MicroSD, MicroSDHC and MicroSDHX cards; I've tried all three in mine. What happens when you try? Are you sure you're pushing it in all the way until it locks? As for the final version of Office 2013, it's waiting for you. But it's considered an "optional" upgrade, so it's...

Post well, I killed my surface RT...now how can I restore it...

There is. Desktop > Control Panel > System and Security > File History. Tap "Recovery" at the bottom of the left pane, and you'll find an option to "Create a Recovery Drive." It copies the Recovery Partition to a flash drive and makes the flash drive bootable for using in the Advanced Startup...

Post Unable to reset or refresh Surface RT

Ah, I'd mistakenly thought showing "Hidden Items" from the View ribbon would show those. So I turned off Hide Protected OS Files, and found the Recovery folder. But when I opened a command prompt with administrative privileges and visited the folder, it was empty, just like yours.

Post Surface RT Accessory Compatibility Thread: Post Your Results

Microsoft's site seems to take an "innocent until proven guilty" approach. The site lists my StarTech USB21000S as Windows RT compatible with "free download required." Sure, it's recognized by Windows RT, but it needs a driver. Windows Update looks, but can't find anything. And, since Windows...

Post Unable to reset or refresh Surface RT

I don't have a C:\Recovery Folder on my Surface, if that helps. I've used the Reset feature many times, and the only thing named recovery is a text file in the root with 0 bytes. It sounds like you need a Recovery Drive: Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Recovery. I created one shortly...

Post Windows RT USB drivers may never arrive

That's a good question. To control things, I turned on Airplane Mode. Then I plugged in an Easy Transfer Cable. Surface RT recognized the cable, and USB Transfer Device appeared in Device Manager, but with the yellow exclamation point. I turned off Airplane Mode, opened the Device Manager's...

    Post Anyone Tried USB Ethernet?

Microsoft's Compatibility Center site lists my Startech USB21000S USB Ethernet adapter as being compatible with Windows RT. Windows RT recognizes it when I plug it in, and the adapter shows up in Device Manager. But it's still listed as needing a driver. And there's no driver to be found...

Thread Windows RT USB drivers may never arrive

There's already a great thread where people are reporting what USB/Bluetooth items will and won't work on the Surface RT. According to Pluggable, a manufacturer of USB peripherals, the problem lies much deeper: Windows RT doesn't support any USB device requiring a driver, and support may never...

    Post Gps issues

Thread [Q] Does the Gallery app support tags?

The Gallery app lets you sort and view photos by Time, Location, Album, and Tags. Time sorts photos chronologically; Location groups them by GPS tracking. Album seems to group them by their folder's name. But Tags doesn't seem to have any use. Every photo is listed as "untagged." The Xoom's...

    Post [Q] Gmail App

The desktop version of Gmail deletes Trash messagse when they're 30 days old. That naturally deletes them from your Xoom's Gmail app, as well. If there's a way to empty the trash any earlier from the Gmail app, I haven't found it.

Post [Q] Can anyone confirm what Verizon charges monthly in taxes and fees for the XOOM?

I don't know the monthly taxes fees and surcharges, but I noticed that Verizon's charging me for any text messages sent to my Xoom's number. And the Xoom can't even send or receive SMS messages! That's pretty nervy.

Post USB problem with Vista - Help!

From what I recall, I had to turn on Xoom's debug mode to connect with Vista. Try this on your Xoom: 1. Head to Apps -> Settings -> Applications -> Development 2. Put a checkmark in "USB Debugging" 3. Unplug your Xoom from the USB port, wait five seconds, and plug it back in. Worked for me.

Encryption encrypts the Xoom's entire contents. You can get back in by entering the PIN or password you chose when encrypting. Encryption is meant to keep thieves from accessing your data, even if they've stolen your Xoom. You can always get back into your *own* encrypted Xoom, simply by...

Post [Q] Anyone been able to pull off the notification sounds in Honeycomb?

They're in system\media\audio\notifications. You can get to them with a file manager App like Astro. Probably the easiest way is to download the Xoom Files dump that somebody linked to awhile back. Or, using Astro, you can select them all and copy them to your Download folder, which is...

Home screen customization settings aren't backed up Google's Backup remembers a lot of settings, but it never backs up the Home screen settings. It takes awhile to add all my shortcuts and widgets to the five home screens, so I wish Google could remember those, as well. Hope it's included in...

Post Lol, so how bout dat price?

Competition will drop the price somewhat, but Motorola's made an effort to create a solid, hackable device that's upgradeable to 4G. That's a well-played move toward longetivity in a soon-to-be overcrowded market. I don't see the price dropping for awhile, especially since there's no way to...
