Updated to the latest ROM Manager 5.0.1.5 and deleted the .nomedia in the root of /mnt/sdcard seemed to fixed the missing media issue. no reboot needed

Yup I mentioned it does remove the action overflow button or what ever they all it in GMAIL, Play etc. I've mentioned that. I don't think there is an easy way to fix that seems like it's a framework change, I tracked it to the PhoneWindowManager class but I'm not sure what names they've used...

Not sure what you mean exactly. I'll try the relays because it at-least gives me a standard interface to work with (bluetooth or wifi) so there isn't any work you have to deal with on the hardware abstraction.. Although it would probably be better designed if I had some sort of voltage input...
