hey mate :) you are completely right. after a bit of wriggling i got the "usb debugging connected" to show up and it is now recognised by adb. sometimes simple solutions are the most effective. many thanks for your common sense!!

thanks for the suggestion. you have just reminded me that i recently replaced the usb port in the phone. i guess it could be that but i will continue looking for other solutions because i dont want to replace the usb port again :)
