Used the AP.tar...seems to have went through fine, rebooted and nothing was wiped (expected a wiped phone). Then tried the OTA and it failed. Since no wipe, root was still installed...it's been a long time since I used Odin so I must have forgot it does not wipe?

Rock solid ROM. What it may lack in features can be easily made up for using xposed framework with Gravity Box and themes. I paired it with the latest Glitch kernel for double tap to wake and I'm very pleased with my setup. BTW, Glitch has turned out to be solid a rock, mostly at default...

Yep, very Apple-like to do something like that and not let the user override in some form or fashion. I don't need HTC telling me/forcing on me what they think is best for my user experience. They need to update the email app so it functions like Gmail, for instance, with respect to this issue.

Highest is def not what it should be. Seems like maybe I'm in the minority, but I like mine on full brightness unless I'm in a dark room where it would bother my eyes. The screen on this phone is so beautiful at full brightness.

Forgetting settings seems to have worked for me.

Yep, battery could be an issue...I would say app/mod would need granular settings and not connected to the built-in LED settings (so you could turn those off to avoid both blinking and further battery drain).

We had something like this on the Samsung Captivate since it did not have an LED. Well, I love HTC stuff, but the tiny notification light is not one of my favorite features. Seems like it would be a nice mod to have the capacitive lights blink for notifications.
