Quickest fix If you're rooted, use root explorer or something similar to go into system/etc/ and delete the hosts file. It worked great for me.

thanks for the tip. i tried it, but still nothing... :( I just went ahead and did a titanium backup, then booted into recovery and wiped. it seems to have worked, and titanium did a pretty good job of restoring all of my system data too, better than i remembered with my g1 anyway... hopefully...
