If you want to dirty flash or flash new version ROM on old version ROM without wiping data, these method is used. But i prefer clean flash. :)

If you want to clean flash than follow what OP says, Before flashing the ROM you have to full wipe and factory reset.

Before flashing the ROM, take a nandroid backup via twrp, incase if u want to revert it. Good luck. Happy flashing!

I tried cm-12.1 20160825 and its stable, you can use as a daily driver. Everything is working for me. Before flashing the ROM take current ROM backup via twrp recovery so u can revert it if u want. :)
