Yes, the IR transmitter is infrared-based (IR=infrared) and that's how Sony's Remote Control apps works, by sending the right codes via the infrared blaster on the top of the device. As for unlocking the device on its last update, thats incredibly unlikely, but we can always maintain hope :P

Also, this might just be me, but if you already have a Galaxy Note, a 7" Nexus 7 is probably not the right choice for you. There's only going to be 2 inches of difference between them. This is just my opinion, of course, but make sure you try out a Nexus before you go buying one.

Yeah, but expecting that was dreaming pretty high. Sony's most innovative hardware has always been their most protected and locked down for multitude of reasons. If you need a highly extensible and customisable technology, skip the Sony offerings.

Haven't tried myself (don't have an adapter) but others on the forum have tried and there doesn't appear to be any MHL capability at all. Sony would prefer you use DLNA to stream your content, so the omission of MHL makes sense. It's an irritating absence, but we can't have everything :)
