ok going to have to ask the noob question. i see it says that damn bleeding kernel #10 i have is still unrootable. But.... my understanding (which is probably wrong) is that a firmware update would change the kernel? so am i missing something? or is it i cant change locale without root?

No custom Rom as you mentioned so the benefits are limited to apps that use root etc. as far as i am aware (please someone correct me if i am wrong) but as long as you are just rooting the version on the tablet the official updates will still arrive normally and be ok to install. just obviously...
