I believe people have been working on using ODIN to flash a pre-rooted system image specific to a given phone, even with a locked bootloader, to at least get root. Then, as you said are attacking unlocking the bootloader so you can load a custom recover, etc Al

I find CM13 more responsive than 12. Not sure what you mean by lighter. Only minor annoyance is unable to power off from menu ( Nook reboots) and need to go to TWRP and power off.

Try and close down from recovery & see if that helps
