Did u configure USB access within Ubuntu? If Ubuntu can see the device while it's in fastboot mode then it's not VMware issue, its the USB access within Ubuntu Sent from my XT1585 using Tapatalk

Those files are gone man, u might have been able to save them prior to rebooting the device but they are gone now and your going to need to flash the factory image in order to fix your file system, devices have a certain structure of creating file systems, that's why they tell ppl not to delete...

Flashing a modem will not brick your device, at most, if by chance say you flashed a modem for another device u may break radio, but that's about it, as long as you flash the modem intended for your device, there is no chance for a brick Sent from my XT1526 using Tapatalk

Yeah stock recovery doesn't really allow anything, its more locked down than anything, my suggestion to u would be root it, grab a aosp ROM or something that looks stable from one of the development threads, if I could I'd suggest Beanstalk, I was a part of that development team for a long time...
