Did you use the newest TWRP or CWM? TWRP seems to backup the "Preload" partition. I have backed-up, tried out an AOSP based ROM then restored Embryo 7. You can also try to flash the "Preload fix" from the Embryo 6 thread.

The "3 step" button a the top of the drop down is the standard Android button to clear all. The "Clear" button in the Notification section of the drop down is added by Sammy to the TouchWiz ROM. (At least that is my thought after using CM10, AOKP and ParanoidAndroid)

I have not had that issue. I personally haven't tried this on CM9 (although I hear it works). I would be surprised if it does work out of the box on CM10.
