...have HU with "J" in front of the version number. as long as your HW configuration marching the firmware., you can safely proceed the update. The "J" will always stay in front of the version number. Mine is now J1.73, not too sure why there is a "J", i am guessing maybe different hardware...

On TomTom silencing the radio, did you set Car Settings->Navigation to TomTom? I would guess the HU's OS need to know the nav app that can speak to temporarily mute the radio/music player and resume when nav sound is finished. Bluetooth call does the same but HU already know the default...
