Yup. I also had problems with OTA and TWRP. The phone booted, but wasn't able to do an automatic installation. I had to download the ROM on my PC, copied the file to my SD card and did an install from TWRP.

Did you change your default dialer? You'll have to set Google dialer as default, otherwise you will have issues making or receiving calls.

On Windows you can use Recuva. The Testdisk/PhotoRec combo is available on nearly any platform. Despite it's name PhotoRec will also recover files. Good luck.
