why would i want to root it / rom it?

Which apps are cool. i mainly use it for the speakers as i walk around at work in my pocket i heard there was safe ways to boost the speaker. I've had it about 4 days and i can get maybe 10 11 hours of battery time and about 3 5 screen time even on low settings what not. i'd like a tad bit more...
