it's the phone, not the carrier. you can see this by sending a multi-picture MMS to yourself. the sent message and the received messages are the same. there is nothing post sending that has changed.

to OP: i never tried this before now. I sent myself 4 pictures and you're correct. the sent and received message shows a picture with a play symbol. and when i click on that it shows the 4 pictures in a slideshow with small thumbnail images. when I send a single picture it shows up in full view.

I think you should go back to stock to see what that's like. then test each of the custom ROMS.

I don't see anything easy, or pre-built. is it a requirement to be on 2.2 froyo? this is a $1 app, System App Remover, find it in the Market. and it may work for you, i've never used it.

toon, how about working out why ADB doesn't work? it's much more pleasant to be able to copy/paste commands which reduces alot of headache and chance of mistakes. do you have a computer and data cable?
