Solution ended up being to flash the stock kernel, let the os encrypt, tell it to decrypt, then re-flash/re-root - all is well again.

The reason it went away is you flashed another ROM. You're right, it was "cooked" in, but what it was "cooked" into was the ROM that you replaced when you flashed damagecontrol. This is only my opinion, so please be nice.... Most people (the common person) that steals/borrows/finds your phone...
