Thread Contacts Storage using high CPU?

I installed PowerTutor to try to identify what's using most of my battery, and it turns out that Contacts Storage is consistently using almost 50% of the phone's resources. If I'm reading this right, how can that be? I hardly ever go into contacts. Any ideas?
