You should be able to install a recovery on stock. Does not need to unlock the bootloader. But for what purpose?

Recovery is different to flash mode. Pressing volume key while plugging USB = flash mode. Repeatedly pressing volume key right after powering up = recovery mode. Only available if you installed custom recovery.
