Yep, magisk works fine, xposed not (so far), there's an unofficial version but I'm not chancing it!

Try right clicking in Thunar and opening a root-privileged window ("open root Thunar here" iirc). It won't work. There is a way to set a root password I believe to allow this functionality using the passwd command, not sure of usage though. If you want to manipulate system files of install apps...

May depend on the application, if it requires root to run (synaptic for instance) then it must be started from the command line, ie. "sudo synaptic" will start synaptic, but running it from the applications menu will not.

That screen is there because you unlocked the bootloader, it's nothing to do with recovery. The easiest way to get root is to boot twrp, not flash it. Can't remember the exact commands but once twrp is booted it can be used to flash magisk. Then simply reboot system and use flashify to...

I dirty flashed crDroid, from the same source as lineage, no issues. Wipe cache and dalvik then flash the zip. I didn't have to reflash gapps, everything worked as before, even fingerprints were still saved. Obviously make a nandroid backup if there's room on your Sd card (mine ran to 8gb+!!).

New bug (1/9/18 build), stock music player (and 2 from play store) force close on opening, had to install vlc which works fine.

Been running this for 3 days now, only issue is with magisk xposed not working. The framework will install but it warns of not being compatible with arm64 something or other. On reboot got force closes on a variety of apps and had to remove the framework to rectify it.

No mate, use twrp as "allow modifications", then mount system. Shouldn't be necessary really but best to ensure it is actually mounted, twrp can be fickle at times I've found!
