For taking quick pictures I love the instant responsiveness of the Nexus out of the box. Its so fast I often take dozens of photos and just delete the ones that aren't 'perfect' (like any photographer does).

I'd say go for it, if you're at least moderately technically inclined. At the very least unlock the bootloader (this will wipe your phone so backup any photos etc!). Rooting can be done later if you do that first.
