Yes, you need gapps and leave everything in zips. Twrp rights them directly from zip to your drive. Also make sure to move your "full 5.1.1" backup off your SD card and onto a third party system in case you wipe it by accident. Load into Twrp, go to wipe. Then do the factory reset option...

That might explain the battery drain when Wi-Fi is enabled. Did you try the legacy dhcp option in developer menu?

Noob question: What's clean vs dirty flashing? If I boot into recovery, factory reset using the "recommended wipe" and then flash the zip + gapps is this clean or dirty?

It's funny you should say that because the pic posted above is hands down the most impressive battery life I've gotten out of my phone so far... It probably helped that I uninstalled almost every stock app except for Kies Air, Allshare, Polaris Office and Youtube. I'll try the other kernel...
