Accessing fastboot mode can be done by swiping from top-left to bottom-right as soon as the first boot logo displays. (NB, as far as I can tell this will not work if the device is in retail mode.) After doing this it will stay on this logo screen and say "CSC Fastboot mode!" at the top-left.
