There are two parts to this. One is the bootloader/recovery startup process and the other is the ROM you have on your phone. You can wipe the ROM and it won't boot. Probably a dumb comment, but are you leaving off the black cover? If not, I would use the Gear VR without it. It just holds in heat.

another possible way.. This worked for me once.. Restore the stock version. E.g. Verizon. Then use the setup/phone/reset to factory option. I flashed the wrong note 2 room onto my i605 . Restoring via twerp didn't work, but the above did.
