That guide is ancient and not applicable. You can only use root apps as intended if you have root. If KK 4.4.4 or Lollipop then no root and currently no way to get it. There is no downgrade to any rootable version if you are running 4.4.4 or above. I was happy to stay rooted with 4.3.

just a guess but for Note 2/3/4 users with locked bootloaders you cannot flash a kernel. Using safestrap or another vitual rom required it to be TW-based. If you're running true AOSP and was able to flash CM are you sure you're running the stock kernel?

Did you do a factory reset when you upgraded? A lot of Note 4 users who upgraded had similar issues which a factory reset corrected.

Your bootloader is now locked to 4.4.4 and you cannot go back. you need 4.4.4 firmware. I'm on 4.3 so you'll need to do some reading but the answer is here.

With my old Charge it was one after the other. Stopped at MJE with the Note 3 so I can't say for sure.

You might want to check out the Note 4 forum for scripts that can disable a ton of the bloatware without root. I am still rocking rooted MJE so I can't test it with kitkat. It supposedly will run on most android phones. Just wanted to mention a potential solution until root achieved...
