It's probably the Asian version because the manual has HTC contact number for the Far East and Australia. I would have preferred a European version for the 800 MHZ band.

Yes so you can flash a Rom from fastboot (penguin screen) and don't need your PC to recognize your phone in CWM mode.

Why do you need it to be recognized in CWM mode? You can copy the new ROM when already booted into the old ROM!

When you get the penguin, the device should be recognized. do to cmd and navigate to your fastboot/adb folder. Place system.img from the 2.1.1.5 ROM in this thread into the same folder. Then type fastboot.exe flash system system.img Then wait and you should boot into the 2.1.1.5 Rom. Install...

Vivo isn't recognized in recovery for some reason. You will have to boot into fastboot and then flash a system.img. Then transfer you ROM and boot into recovery to flash.

So it doesn't work. It's highly annoying and a deal-breaker for me. Maybe a custom Rom is able to fix it eventually. Another problem I've had with the original ROM is apps (other than Google), aren't able to find location using Wifi/mobile networks. GPS works fine.

Has anyone tried changing the font itself? I think the default font is the problem. I tried changing once, but I got semi-bricked.

I too was having the Error 170 and 171. The solution is very simple. While your hero is plugged in, go to the device manager. On android devices click ADB/My hero. Go to install new driver. Go to select from list. There will be two options, click HTC Hero. Now you will not get the 170 error...
