Don't get this confused with people that have the grandfathered unlimited plan which has a different SOC and can get access to the different apn with lte access.

Once again I have all the required pieces to confirm this, but you can also confirm this yourself. Just need a lte capable
sim and try to manual get access to anyone of these apn isp, phone, pta which are lte apn on any non-smartphone. Result will be denied access.

First time poster here! I've been reading up quite a bit on which phone to pick up and I think I will go with the Samsung Galaxy Ace. It's listed as a usable phone with media net but is not "confirmed". Does anyone know for sure that this is a phone which is undetected by at&t as a "smartphone"? Insight would be much appreciated.

Since it's not confirmed that means no one that has posted in the thread has tried it. You may try posting/looking in the Ace section to see if anyone uses theirs on AT&T.

I do have a question, since those phones on the list can use the cheaper data plans.. can those phones also be used with no data plans at all? I know the nokia symbian os ones require no data plan.

It doesn't support AT&T 3G, so you're only going to get 2G EDGE data speeds.. That sometimes peaks up to ~50kB/sec but usually is slower.

Personally, never heard of this phone, the less common it is, the less you're going to find info about it. Those situations you're going to have to either test it yourself or hope you find someone out there who did it and posted it online.

I think most phones that don't get 3G/3.5G (UMTS/HSPA) don't get swept on IMEI sweeps, only those that do.

Samsung Galaxy S III / S3

Looks like for the most part, the SGS3 will work except a minor few that are getting reported as iPhones. However, those people (2 cases I've read on here alone) call the CSR to get their phones reset and then it eventually works. No further complaints since then.

I'm also seeing Tmobile is releasing their SGS3 (T999) so that might be an option soon for others who aren't after the international i9300, with similar i9100 vs t989 hardware differences again.
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s_iii_t999-4804.php

Although, development for the tmobile SGS always has lacked behind the international SGS' stuff.

Saw someone posted their personal history with tethering and how far they went with unlimited.

It's anecdotal info, but it looks pretty much like you can use "as much as you want". Personally, I don't see the need for torrenting on a phone, but to each their own.

yes, the unlimited media net plan ... consider it as a plan for people who are not expected to use more than 100mb a month. So by att there arent any monitoring with those users ... so you are able to use gigs upon gigs per month.

remember users who dont have smartphones now on att are in the minority.

this is my past years usage ...

Whaaaaat???? The most ive ever used is 12gbs and thats when my home internet crapped out and i had to tether. I dont see how anyone could possibly use 50gbs on a phone

Do I need the unlock code from tmobile?

Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium

The galaxy S and S2 were pretty simple to unlock on your own once rooted. There is an app in the app store that can do it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...unlock&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDNd

It looks like the dev recently updated to work with S3 but probably still testing it out. Of course you will need to root first to use it, but that has already been done on the S3 also: http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1726725

I wrote this up for people interested in seeing what they could purchase currently out there on the market without being bumped up for an AT&T plan.
This list probably doesn't concern most people on XDA on Tmobile and CDMA carriers, but for those looking for a savings this is where it's at.

    Code:
General disclaimer: I'm not responsible if you get bumped up on a smartphone plan.
Please do proper research and googling and make sure you have the right phone before putting your SIM in.
If you get bumped to a smartphone plan, be prepared to contact your AT&T CSR with the IMEI of a dumbphone and ask them to set it for you.
Ask questions here or check with the specific forums before attempting if you're not sure.

What the AT&T dumbphone / medianet/family plan is for:
Some rundown and pricing details in this post: [URL]http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?p=26201562#post26201562[/URL]

A data plan used for 'dumbphones' and IMEI of phones not stored in AT&T's IMEI database,
which is not limited to android and smartphones. Technically, any phone capable of retrieving
UMTS/3G/HSPA 850mhz/1900mhz bands is capable of accessing this service.
Whether or not the device is stored in AT&T's database is another question.
This lets you keep using the AT&T service without having to add another contract,
or continue using an existing one without upgrading.

    There are 4 options:
    - Grandfathered MediaNet users pay $10/month for unlimited data for one line.
    - Current Regular single line users pay $15/month for unlimited data for one line.
    - Current Family plan users can pay $10/month for 1 line with unlimited data with the bundled with $30 messaging unlimited for all lines.
    - Current Family plan users can pay $15/month for a single line for unlimited data only.

    This allows end users to:
    A) Continue to get an unlimited service for cheaper (although we speculate there is a threshhold before they start watching you)
    B) Pay $10-15 less a month
    C) Keep your old plan, no subsidized prices for new phones
Generally, any of the following world carriers should release phones that are on their UMTS(3G) 850 and 1900 MHz bands, making it compatible in the USA for 3G: Rogers (Canada), Telus (Canada), Fido (Canada), Bell (Canada), Virgin Mobile (Canada), Sasktel (Canada), movistar (South America), Claro (South America). It's important to know that the phone you get has radios for the UMTS 850 UMTS 1900 bands, since AT&T operates on both frequency sets in the USA.
Most if not all T-mobile model/branded phones (affixed on digitizer) are likely flagged as of 2012.

How to check if your device is flagged in AT&T IMEI Database: there are 2 ways, both end up on the same page.
If you just recently got flagged (text message saying smartphone plan) then you need to wait a set amount of time before it will show up in OLAM. Maybe around 1-2 days

    1) Go to http://wireless.att.com
    2) Log in to your account thru OLAM (On-Line Account Management)
    3) Check if your phone shows up with a generic icon or actual photo (see below)
    Fs12XhK.png

4a) Method 1 (thanks to lovem): Go to http://www.att.com/devicehowto/
5a) On the top left where it shows your current device, see if you have a generic phone icon. To check your other lines click "Change" and you will see your list of devices.
6a) If your device shows up as "unknown unknown", your IMEI has not been detected by AT&T.
    7a) If you're undetected, profit. $$$

4b) Method 2 (thanks to sucss): If you already have a phone/line identified in the database (with photo), click the phone.
5b) Click "View Tutorials for this device"
6b) Click "Change" and look for the phone/line
    7b) If you're undetected, profit. $$$

I think instead of putting a list of working phones, I can just put non-working phones on the front page. That way the newcomers know what doesn't work, and they can PM for the listing.

I'll start working on it soon.

I'm starting a private list. If you'd like to add a phone or update a current phone, just message me.

Only requirements for the list are:

200 posts or you're a long time member.
Don't share it(if anyone else wants it, tell them to PM me).

It's a Google Doc stored on my Google Drive, so updates to the list will be available immediately.
