I acquire an unlock code from AT&T today. When I tried to unlock, I get the error "Network unlock request unsuccessful".
I'm wondering if it is because I'm running a custom baseband/kernel/ROM?

Do I need to be on stock ROM? I heard elsewhere that some ROMs don't have the ability to unlock?

I'm running:
ROM: Slim-4.2.2.buid.8-OFFICIAL0
Baseband, I727UCMC1
Kernel: 3.0.72+Marla-SLIM.0.3+

Just following up for others here. I went back to stock ROM and unlocked with success! Thank you for the tip. Here was my process:

  1. Return back to stock using recovery flash (not ODIN): http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=2228486
  2. Installed busybox in recovery as well
  3. Installed Super SU from app store
  4. Installed GooManager from app store
  5. Downloaded and installed OpenRecovery TWRP image
  6. Rebooted with Verizon SIM card
  7. Inserted Network Unlock Code
  8. Success!
  9. Shut down, re-inserted original AT&T SIM card
  10. Rebooted & Re-flashed my original nandroid backup
