I Have Root!!

I just followed the procedure posted in this thread and did not have to install another homesync OS to get root. I did have to install kies on my laptop cause I apparently needed the drivers. The drivers i had installed work for my SG3 but did not for homesync.

I also have the JDQ39.B9150UEUBMH8 build. No issues with the method after installing keis to my PC.

Thanks all for the great easy root info!!!

Now to play with my root ;)

I just got my homesync today and my Note 3 works flawlessly with mine. My phone was replaced yesterday so I have not rooted or modified it in anyway. The app hasn't crashed once for me. Could be an issue with your phone. My new phone came with 4.4 on it.

Yes, I was wrong. I'm on stock T-Mobile 4.4 and after everything updated the homesync and note 3 are working together nicely.

Did you notice any difference before and after the update? Will you try and root it following the method from a few pages back?

Few details on rooting and enabling play store, I added in SD referring this forum. Little clean version
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Can be rooted!
1) Make sure you're at a firmware like MJ3 or earlier. I tried on ML4 but it did not work on this one.
2) Download "saferoot" from the following link:
http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
3) Then read the following post:
https://github.com/koush/Superuser/issues/196
and download the following supersu update:
http://download.clockworkmod.com/superuser/superuser.zip
4) Extract the newly downloadaed superuser.zip and find the su binary in armeabi folder and the superuser.apk in the root folder of the extracted zip file
5) Copy the new su binary and the superuser.apk to the files directory inside extracted saferoot directory. Replace the existing su and superuser.apk
6) Enable development mode and then usb debugging on Homesync
Enable development mode from Settings>About Device > Click on the Build number about several times until Development mode pops up, and then checked usb debugging box
Connect USB cable from your PC to microUSB on HomeSync, install Samsung_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones (google it) so that the computer can connect to the HomeSync
7) run saferoot, let it do its job
go to saferoot folder on your PC, run the install.bat to begin rooted process.

Update : existing firmware MH8 is rootable too. below is the log

Code:

Awesome tip, thank you. I was hoping that I would not have to side load all my paid apps. This worked great!

Does anyone know if it would be safe to install a custom recovery such as TWRP? EDIT: Never mind, I re-read the "Saferoot" page where it is explained that custom recovery is not possible since the rooting method does nothing to unlock the bootloader.

Amazon Appstore

Anyone have any luck with the Amazon appstore showing all previously purchased apps? I looked around for a solution similar to what worked for Google Play but found nothing.

I found the fingerprint for the nexis 7 from its build.prop file and modified the file for the homesync, rebooted, reinstalled the Amazon appstore apk but still no go.

Updated to ML4 before finding out that root is possible
on the Homesync.
It is possible Odin back to the previous firmware (MH8),
to be able to apply this root procedure?
Thanks.

Yes, just download the MJ3 firmware from any country and flash with Odin. See above posts for that. You will lose all files so backup first.

i have set up apex launcher to look like this and removed the samsung launcher
i have through trial and error found a few xposed apps to help

weird way they did the status and notification bar

Yes the status bar and notification window is special. I tried to use other SystemUI and framework on this but did not succeed to get a "normal" one. Since the bootloader looks locked I also could not try to flash firmware from Nexus 10 (which seems to have the same hardware components and also produced by Samsung). Any help on this is appreciated.

How did you manage to see the notification window when you are in Apex Launcher? I could not get it on Nova. Are you using MJ3 or other?

Anyone played around with trying to get root to stay while updating from MH8 to ML4? I'd love to get the newer firmware to see if it resolves an issue I have with compatibility on my Vizio SV320XVT.. basically if you turn the TV off then the Homesync never reconnects (despite trying unplug-replug)to it and the only way to get display again is to power off the Homesync and turn it on while the TV is on.. frustrating to say the least.

Sort of curious of SuperSU's survival mode will make the leap.

Yes mine is not happy with an external hard drive hooked up to it either. Is anyone able to pull the info from the NFC tag and post it up for me? My screen mirroring app overwrote the stock tag. Eveytime it tells me I have an invalid tag when I try to connect now.

So just as a heads up to anyone who roots it, my experience was that the script failed after the reboot to run a few commands. So you'll need to manually pull up ADB to load in busybox.. to do that, go from line 122 in the script, and run these commands (converted to user input)

Code:
adb shell
su
pm disable com.sec.knox.seandroid
mount -o remount,rw /system
rm -f /system/etc/install-recovery-2.sh
rm -f /system/xbin/selinuxoff
cp /system/xbin/daemonsu /system/xbin/su
chown 0.0 /system/xbin/su
chmod 6755 /system/xbin/su
chmod 6755 /system/xbin/daemonsu
chmod 6755 /system/xbin/super
rm /system/xbin/super
/system/xbin/busybox --install -s /system/xbin
mount -o remount,ro /system

Beyond that though, you're still stuck with Koush's superuser app. I'm trying to get SuperSu loaded up but I understand that there's some inherent problem because of the way that the Su binary operates.. I'm not sure I understand enough of the thread at https://github.com/koush/Superuser/issues/196 to port the fix into SuperSu's binary.. oO

Would love to get SuperSu to see if the OTA survival lives through an update.

I found out that busybox was not installed when I tried to run Trickster Mod and got the error message telling me. Another way to get busybox installed is to use the busybox installer in ROM Toolbox Pro (JRummy Apps Inc) or the stand alone busybox installer app from JRummy free in the playstore.

I sure would like to use SuperSu as well. No luck when I tried to install it either. Thanks for trying to sort it out!

It does, but the random stuff xposed may break wasn't worth it so I uninstalled all my modules. I really don't care much about the status bar or notifications either

hello guys, i know this is out of the topic but i cannot find anywhere to ask this,, i just got my homesync yesterday, immeiately i hook it up into my tv,, however i could not set up my device (note3) as administrator. also in the settings of the homesync, my samsung account's auto sync is disable and i could not enable it,, thanks in advance for the answer

Hi, I also had some issues with the original firmware. Try to upgrade it either from the UI (settings, about) or using Odin or Kies after downloading the latest firmware for your country from sammobile.com . I had MJ3 firmware which was working good.

    Guys,

I finally managed to root the Homesync. Here's what I've done.
    7) run saferoot, let it do its job

You shall now be rooted. If you want to keep it, don't upgrade to newer firmware. I'll try to see if there's a way to upgrade but still keep root.

PS. All credit goes to k1mu who built the saferoot tool and the discussion in the bug report, and the updated su from Koush.

You can download any MJ3, such as the one from Turkey or Singapore, etc. Installing this with Odin will make you lose all what's inside the Homesync (including the 1TB drive content), so make sure to backup. (Thanks Fastguy)

    ENABLING PLAY STORE
Note: You have to root first,
This is simplest method found and you dont need to edit build.prop. if this helps, consider donating app developer.
    Steps:
    1.Download Market helper from http://codekiem.com/market-helper/latest
    2.Install and open
3.It will ask for root permissions, grant
4.Use settings as for nexus 7
    5. Enable device on google dashboard

TA DAA.. you are all set.

If you reboot, you have to follow above steps again. Anyway this device supposed to be turn on all time (personal cloud) so this should not matter.

    Full steps

Guys my Homesync's emmc got fried, I can't write or delete anything anymore. So I will open the box, extract the HDD and retire it. I won't be contributing in this thread anymore.

LOulOo I am tempted to try to flash Nexus 10 recovery or the 4.2.2 nexus factory system.img

I spent a lot of hours yesterday trying to bring a stock navbar with clock and notifications but I failed. I also still can't see the usual apps in Play store although I did all possible changes in the build.prop.

I will hope that the system.img from nexus 10 is compatible :)

I also wrote to Chainfire for a flash kernel for Mobile Odin but he did not write back yet.

In fact it's still OK. I'm running SMB server and SSH server on it. They run on non standard ports but all my pc are Linux so it's not an issue.
I have Torrent for downloading, Xbmc for media, bittorent sync for syncing. Biggest annoyance is the timestamp issue that's bugging all phones and tablets with ext4 sdcards and that play store is a joke with nearly all apps not compatible while most of them run just fine. Why did Sammy do something like this is beyond my understanding.
