Thanks for all your help.
But I solved the problem.
I just installed the Kodi fork SMPC.
And now everything plays normal.
So I won't be unrooting it.
I just can't get openvpn to work.
I installed the required binarys with openvpn installer.
Then I imported the VPN configuration files from my vpn provider ( AirVpn)
Installed openvpn settings.
Then I choose the VPN confige file but nothing happens.
I checked everything is installed.
Anybody else tried this?

i'm just asking if the command works. i know from my fire tablet that disabling those apps will work to disable updates...someone elsewhere had posted that the command wasn't working. i forget where i saw that earlier this afternoon...
Successfully rooted using kingoroot

Tried multiple times on 5.0.5.1 version, stuck at 90% multiple times. Tried again and again, rebooting and all. switched usb ports, installed superuser, uninstalled superuser, cleared cache, cleared data on kingoroot. nothing.

Finally decided to just update to the new version. After fully updating, ran kingoroot, and it said my wifi was down. but it was working. rebooted again, and tried launching kingoroot.

It kept crashing back to the apps screen. So tried several times and no go. Went into ADB fire, connected and ran install api for superuser again. and while I was still installing superuser, got kingoroot to launch and it rooted successfully. confirmed by running superuser after reboot and it shows kingoroot is allowed.

Not sure if it was a combination of the system installing superuser while kingoroot was trying to root or what, but it is rooted now.

Not sure what I plan on doing with it with root access, but if anyone has ideas to make it better, I'm all ears.

I really only need it to launch spmc on boot. since that is what I use it for mostly, apart from netflix and pandora.

Nothing much yet id advise until rbox releases custom recovery.
You can make a start by disabling updates, as if by the time rbox has finished and released custom recovery the fire stick/tv might of endured more updates rendering root unavailable. At least you have root now and as long as you block updates your good for when recovery is released.
Then maybe xposed, any custom launchers that might work.
Just don't try install stuff that could brick the device until you have recovery.

What happens if I unroot the stick, as far as the OTA updates. I disabled the updates but want to unroot at this point to get the PS VUE app back. Will updates still be disabled if I can successfully unroot?

Edit part

How do i do the edit part? //edit
Everything worked great, just dont know that part works thanks.

Worked as charm.
First installed super user, then kingoroot..
Adb didn't work at first but it did after disabling and enabling it back.
Just can't disable Ota update

//edit pm disable com.amazon.device.software.ota did the trick.

Ive been trying this for a few hours now.

Fire Stick on 5.0.5.1 purchased a couple of weeks ago in the UK. It does not currently have the option to download the newer firmware 5.2.1.0.

Tried the apk method using various timings, tried with and without the su (from op) app installed, with and without firestopper - no luck. Tried the windows program - no luck either.

Strangely at some point without my knowledge KingoSuper Battery managed to install itself, I assume this was via the Windows program. It got swiftly uninstalled.

Ill keep trying i suppose :)

Try windows again and when it gets to 70 percent plug the hdmi in.

I've tried this so many times with no luck. When I open KingoRoot it shows Android version 5.1, is this why I can't get root. My AFTV Stick software version still says 5.0.5.1.

Also, this is the error I'm getting, but I don't know the significance of that address.

If you update to 5.2.1.0 it'll work for sure. With 5.0.5.1 it's very hit or miss. I have one stick still on 5.0.51 and played with it for over 5 hours trying to get it to root with no luck.

On both of my 5.2.1.0 sticks it rooted right away.

Here is the exact APK I used. I also had to have the app "Rotate screen orientation " lock all apps in landscape mode, as kingo wants to open in portrait.

Below should be all you need...

You will need a mouse, or I just used "RemoteMouse" with my iPhone.

The first time I ran it, I thought it froze, and I held the center, Play-pause buttons to reboot the Fire Stick, and on reboot, I ran it again, and it worked. While it was rebooting, the progress bar started moving. SuperUser needs to be installed for it to work.

I Installed BusyBox, as uname isn't on the Fire Stick by default. I also did the Home button double-press disable as proof that it is on 5.0.5.1
    Code:

Tried it too with my second FTV Stick running 5.0.5.1 and it fails...

DId you have the SuperSU app posted above installed? Did you launch it before/after? When it worked after the reboot, did it stop at 90% at all or did it breeze through?

To those who have success with this, do you have Firestarter (or stopper) installed?

Ive got firestopper installed, have not dome anything even instsll super user yet not had chance, will be blocking updates and using my normal root tools when I get them set up later.

I tried it on a 5.0.5.1 Fire TV Stick, replicating what you say, and also failed. I did not need a mouse btw since pressing the center button on the remote starts the rooting process.

If you're not just trolling us, the only thing I can think of is that there's some sweet spot during the rooting attempt that the device needs to be restarted which you hit, since you say "while it was rebooting, the progress bar started moving." Do you remember what percentage it was stuck at? It never goes past 90% for me and then eventually says root failed after about 2 minutes at 90%. When the bar started moving while it rebooted, did it go past 90%?

If there is some sweet spot to reboot at, my guess is it's from when it stops at 90% to 50 seconds later. Around 50 seconds after it stops at 90%, the app tries to mount the system partition as writable and fails.
