The issue for me was the display size setting. I like my font smaller and scaling settings lower to fit more on the screen. When i increased them, it started working again. Had this happen on another ROM previously and forgot about it.

Thank you for your quick response and solution. I'm glad you figured that out, but really disappointing I have to make everything HUGE to use assistant down there. I moved my display size setting from 'Smaller' to 'Small' (which is still really large) and the long-press on the home button bring up google assistant. Issue solved.

OP any ideas on why this reacts this way? I didn't have that glitch on stock Pie. Maybe something with the Benzo Nav bar settings?

No, unfortunately there are problems with various widgets still. So far I haven't been able to find a workaround.

After few failures, I figured out that clean flash is necessary....
Wipe cache/dalvik cache, wipe data, wipe system, none of the three should be ignored. Benzo needs a totally cleaned environment.
Please add this into the flash guidance.

Another problem I confronted: extremely high battery consumption.
When it's standing-by and screen off, the battery can last for 2 days. That's good.
But when I'm using it normally, just Twittering or sending messages or watching Youtube. The battery runs at 40% per hour!!! I can't even play games without charger plugged in.
Anyone knows why? Is there any compatible kernel or configuration that can cool down the battery? Just for Benzo?

Dirty flashing always works for me first try.

Revoot to recovery
Flash rom
Flash twrp
Reboot to system
(optional) Reboot to recovery
(optional) Flash magisk
(optional) Flash kernel

I don't know why, but I came into a system with a lot of missing parts from dirty flash.
Flash a factory Pie image,
Reboot to recovery,
Flash Benzo and reboot,
It boot into a system UI without status bar and Navigation, even the Settings is missing. I can't use any apps either.
This happens every dirty flash.
:eek:

1. anyone get auto brightness flickering between brightness levels?, mainly at night or at least thats when it most noticeable.

2. how is your battery life?, i am getting only 3 hours ;-[

Check my screenshot. This is possible with different kernel, i'm not using the kernel included in the ROM. Try elementalx kernel. In my opinion is the best (if you config with the correct setup) kernel for Pixel XL around

Once again thank you for this amazing rom! I dirty flashed the latest version of it and noticed a small bug: when unlocking with the fingerprint sensor the display brightness is very low. Once I lock and unlock the phone with the power button it goes back up. I can attach a log if needed.

Care to share your setup?

Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk

Yes, sure

I'm using EX Kernel Manager for manage kernel

CPU tab
governor CPU = SCHED for both cluster
perfd = enable
performanced = enable
wq_power_saving = enable
msm_thermal = disable
core_control = enable
vdd_restriction = disable

Graphics tab
Default for all

Gestures
All disabled

Memory
ZRAM = disabled

Miscellaneus tab
I/O scheduler = cfg
Readahead kb = 128
fsync = disabled
USB fastcharge = enable
TCP congestion algorithm = westwood
Block wakelock = enable and all blocked

That's it
If anybody want share or comment other config please go ahead :)

Now I have 3 hours SOT, 10 min phone on (voice), 17 hours standby....66% battery left (delta is 2.1%/h). Total app installed = 90
Wifi always (otherwise mobile data), no bluetooth and GPS for battery saver

Thanks

Damnnnnnn thanks mate, will most def give it a go.

I see you're on 3g and not 4g, what impact does that have on your battery? Also, what is your screen brightness?

    Frequently Asked Questions

    It won't boot OMFG!!!
    Try this if you're having trouble booting.

    I wanna use OpenGAPPS or some obscure Google Apps. How do i?
    You don't. Oreo has more security in /system/priv-app and adding apks that don't come with the zip don't get installed. It may not always be like that, but for now, it is what it is y0

    You have too many gapps in your crappy ROM!
    I try to provide the least amount possible for the setup I like. If you want to know what comes with the ROM browse my repo and look in app and priv-app

    I flashed the ROM, then Google Apps and then vendor. Why does it bootloop? Is that the right order?
    Please read the flashing instructions. Benzo comes with everything you need including the vendor image.

    I'll add more as time goes on and the same questions keep getting asked

    For people having trouble booting custom roms please read:

    Get a copy of the stock boot.img, twrp-3.2.0-0-marlin.img, twrp-pixel-installer-marlin-3.2.0-0.zip and the Benzo Rom zip.

    1. Boot into bootloader
    2. run: fastboot --slot all erase boot
    3. run: fastboot --slot all format system
    4. run: fastboot --slot all format vendor

    Go to where you extracted the stock boot image
    5. run: fastboot --slot a flash boot boot.img
    6. run: fastboot --slot a flash boot twrp-3.2.0-0-marlin.img
    7. run: fastboot --set-active=a
    8. run: fastboot reboot-bootloader
    9. Then select recovery from the bootloader menu
    10. Go to wipe. Move the slider to factory reset which will wipe data, but not internal storage.
    11. Install benzorom-8.1.0-date-version-marlin.zip and twrp-pixel-installer-marlin-3.2.0-0.zip
    12. Reboot

    If you want to install root after boot back into recovery by rebooting and holding volume down after you hit reboot then selecting recovery from bootloader. That will take you into TWRP on slot b which is where you want to install Magisk from. I don't use SuperSU anymore so Magisk is all I know that works.

    You can get the twrp .img and .zip from their site right here.

    Note: If you decide to dirty flash and Settings ends up looking messed up. Delete /system/priv-app/Settings/Settings.apk then reflash. Not sure why it's happening to some people. Just remember to never report problems if you didn't get them on a clean flash. thanks.
