It seems somebody did a lot of trouble to get the average rating of FairEmail down, possible by purchasing 1 star ratings. This is very disappointing to say the least! It is worse enough to get me demotivated for a while.

Hello Marcel,
I'm very sorry; it's really depressing. Is there anything we can do? In the German Play Store today there is such a 1 star rating ("dreck"). I reported it as inappropriate. I'm just afraid it's not going to do much.
It's obviously a general problem; I wasn't that aware of it until I just came across this article in Android Authority:
https://www.androidauthority.com/play-store-fake-review-problem-1082191/amp/
Please don't lose heart!
Thanks for your great app,
Andreas

Marcel, I understand being annoyed and disheartened by one star reviews. It is only human to feel that way.

But remember, that is precisely what these malicious reviews are designed to do. Harm you and change your behavior. Don't let these bad guys succeed in their goal! Don't do what they want and damage your own app by dropping development. Just keep up all your good work and don't change anything because of these phony reviews.

No app can please all users and not all users need everything FairEmail offers, but, in no universe would an *honest* reviewer judge FairEmail as 'one' star. So it is clearly a phony review. Don't let the bad guys achieve their goal. Keep up the excellent work and don't change your behavior one bit. Don't provide the bastards with the satisfaction of winning.

Unfortunately your competitors know they can affect you with negative reviews. Mentioning them in this open thread just encourages them to continue to use this tactic. Show that you are unaffected and they may stop.

I wish there is something I could do to help besides words to encourage you. But it is an ugly unfair world out there. Stay strong my friend.

Thanks for your empathy.

The only think you can do is to leave a nice review in the Play store yourself.

I am not sure what reporting as 'inappropriate' does. Google doesn't tell.

As a developer I can report reviews for violating the rules too, which is almost always rejected by Google, while I am pretty sure most of the reported reviews violate one or more rules. For example "dreck" is definitely against the rules, yet the report was rejected.

I was wondering if there is a way to disable syncing for a specific account without having to delete it.

I've seen a checkbox in the setting, but this allows to enable/disable syncing for all accounts all together.

Another feature I can't find is custom notification for different accounts. Have i missed it or it hasn't been implemented yet?

In the advanced account settings you can set an account to manual (on demand) sync.

Please see here about separate notifications:

Today the average Play store rating is again significantly lower that yesterday. This is definitely not caused by normal user reviews, but what can I do? Google is never there :(

Thanks for adding a black+white theme! The black version looks wonderful but I can't invoke the white version when turning off dark theme in the Android system settings (latest DerpFest 10 on Redmi Note 4).
Going back to red+green theme and checking "Follow system" it works as expected. Perhaps only a feature for Android 11?

Thanks again for all your efforts to make it by far the best email client!!! [emoji1374]

The black and white theme doesn't have an option to follow the system theme and always has a black background.

Okay I guess I was mislead by the text underneath "Follow system" which made me think that the black+white theme is following the system theme [emoji57]
Perhaps an idea to grey it out as well?

It's still 4.7 in the US with one five star after another after another. Only a very occasional 4 star review. Extremely rare to find a 1 star reviews. I had to search to find any.

Follow system is disabled for me for the black and white theme.
Sorry I was not clear enough ... "Follow system" is disabled and greyed out indeed but the explanation underneath is not and I was misunderstanding that and thought it was valid for the black+white theme [emoji6]

The same here in The Netherlands [emoji16][emoji1360]

How was the call with Google today, Marcel?

Google was pretty friendly and cooperative and told me the favicons are indeed the problem, and it can/should be fixed by updating in the privacy policy to "disclose how your app accesses, collects, uses, and shares user data":

    Privacy Policy

All apps must post a privacy policy in both the designated field in Play Console and within the app itself. The privacy policy must, together with any in-app disclosures, comprehensively disclose how your app accesses, collects, uses, and shares user data, not limited by the data disclosed in the Data Safety section. This must include:
    • developer information and a privacy point of contact or a mechanism to submit inquiries
    • disclosing the types of personal and sensitive user data your app accesses, collects, uses, and shares; and any parties with which any personal or sensitive user data is shared
    • secure data handling procedures for personal and sensitive user data
    • the developer’s data retention and deletion policy
    • clear labeling as a privacy policy (e.g., listed as “privacy policy” in title)
The entity (e.g., developer, company) named in the app’s Google Play listing must appear in the privacy policy or the app must be named in the privacy policy. Apps that do not access any personal and sensitive user data must still submit a privacy policy.

Please make sure your privacy policy is available on an active URL (no PDFs) and is non-editable.

So, I have updated the privacy policy and added this new table:

    https://github.com/M66B/FairEmail/blob/master/PRIVACY.md#summary-of-shared-data

I am not sure if it covers everything, so feedback is more than welcome. @mkasimd maybe you can take a look?

Note that I have also enabled BIMI, Gravatars, Libravatars and favicons for the Play store version again.

The short term goal is to release a Play store test version (and associated GitHub version) and to get the update approved. I will think about the next steps after this has been accomplished. Given the huge number of supportive messages I received (much appreciated!) the project will be continued in some form in any case.

Version 1.1900 is available on GitHub now and in the Play store test program after Google's approval (which is the main goal of this release).

It is time for a new, modern, open source, privacy friendly email client for Android.

I have just released a first alpha version for feedback on the design and features.

    Not for production use yet!

Most of the stuff basically works, but be prepared for crashes and error notifications.

Safe email is a working name, but it is for several reasons not a convenient name, so suggestions for a name are welcome.

I have just released alpha version 0.15

    Changelog/download:
    https://github.com/M66B/open-source-email/releases

With a bit of luck the next version can be a beta version.

I am putting a lot of effort into this project, so thanks are appreciated.
