  • The Tips & Tweaks Guide contains important information regarding the ROM/Kernel, especially the fixes on page 2. Please go through them as well.

KERNEL INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS
  1. If you already have Clockworkmod Recovery, grab the flashable zip from this post and Install through clockwork.
  2. If you do NOT have Clockworkmod Recovery, grab the tar from this post and flash with ODIN.
  3. NEITHER of these installation methods will affect your data, although it is always wise to have a backup in the unlikely event of disaster :D
  4. If you have the desire to UV your kernel, please use this version of Voltage Control: http://www.mediafire.com/?m2ybg2v4oqdtknn (Credit Koxudaxi - Rename the .zip to .apk and install!)

KNOWN ISSUES
  • In-call volume is low - THIS IS FIXED BY JMF MODEM. Please flash the JMF modem if you are experiencing low in-call volume :)

TWO ROMS?!? AGAIN?!
I know I know...my intention was to finally get back to one rom with merged locales, however merging the locales has not gone as smoothly as I hoped. So for now, I'm leaving both 1.4.5 and 1.6.1 available. 1.6.1+ has fully integrated locales so it shouldn't give nearly as many issues as 1.6.0 did, but I want to be sure before I remove stable 1.4.5 rom.

DOWNLOAD
Overcome v1.6.4 Full Install - This will wipe all applications and settings! (Not SD-Cards though)
Download links are located in the install guide, which you can download here. Check it out!

Overcome v1.6.4 Updater - No data wipe - This is ONLY for users on 1.6.1 and higher. If you have anything lower You MUST install the full download w/wipe.

EDIT: Can't wait, so I've done my flash just now :) Its fast, but are there any ways to change the transition effect? and perhaps any way you'll include apn settings in future like in MoDaCo rom? :) Thanks for your effort!

okay the animations (screen transitions) are cool and smooth. battery mod is good.
holding power for the phone options to appear, lags.
stability wise:
1. phone app FC when receiving and making calls
2. swype FC

anyone facing the same problem? or is it because after flashing, i restored all apps and data with titanium backup and this is what caused the FCs?

okay confirmed. i reinstalled the overcome rom. afterwhich, i did not do a titanium restore. swype works but not phone. it will still FC.

running modaco kernel.

Glad you guys like it! I am looking in to the Phone thing now, I should have a fix for you later. I don't use my tab for phone calls so that part kind of went untested ;)

Also, with regards to the power button menu lagging...i'm aware of that too. It lagged to begin with on stock, then with the change in transitions it made the lag a lot more noticeable. I'll be working on that too.

I'll be back soon with a fix.

The transitions are baked in to the framework-res.apk...i'll upload an alternative version with stock animations for those that dislike the modified ones. As for the APN settings, I will look into what MoDaCo does and try and include it for us!

However you can use "MoreLocale 2" from market to adjust any locale you need.

Hi,
I thought about Polish locale. However if there is MoreLocale on market, thats nothing to worry about.
Will give a try. Thanks.
What kernel do you recommend by the way? I'm interested in stable ext4 solution. OC its not required.

Thanks! cause phone function is obviously important to us;) perhaps for the transition can tell us how to you apply it to framework-res.apk so we don't need to burden you in future? or put out a few transition effect to choose from? :) thanks again! the apn is for the convenience, but it would be great addition for newbies.

    v1.6.0 is Live!

    New rom out :D

    v1.6.0 -

Basically we've moved to a single base now. ZTKC1 - Android 2.2.1. It's an asian Rom, but I managed to fix everything that makes Asian roms suck (Locale selections, font selection, camera shutter sound, etc.) Meaning the 1.5.0-BETA fork has ended and we are back to a single rom - YAY!

One other change is I have omitted the KA1 GPS fix this time around and only applied my GPS tweaks. It is faster than any of the previous roms using KA1 GPS files, so please try it first BEFORE going and reapplying a fix that is no longer relevant! (NOTE: The LbsTestMode tweaks mentioned in the guide MUST still be applied!)

No kernel changes this time around.

    Enjoy!

    The Decision On The Links

I'll put a target on the back of my head and say this: just this once, screw the noobs. If they don't read they break their device, simple.

    Seconded....

I can appreciate it gives AB more time to work on coding although IMO most of the annoying noobs are being dealt with by the thread/dev groupies. now again I come back to the place that; yet again the vocal minority is ruining it for the rest of us. I love being able to just jump on XDA app and download (if just an update) it and flash it on the go.. its part of the excitement for me and honestly the most rewarding experience has been messing up and learning why, fixing it and starting over... lol. Having said that I have been doing full restocks last 2 updatea so have been tied to the laptop to complete them lately.. I guess its just the principal of it all... I thought this was a development area not a training section...

One final thought, what kind of a world would it be if we always catered to and, yes, mollycoddled the lowest common denominator? Holding their hands and helping them get into things they prolly shouldn't touch.. to them I say; find a geeky friend and let them do it for ya, chances are you'll make their day.

I think xda-developers runs the risk of being too noob friendly... afterall its called (android) galaxy tab Development, not (android) galaxy tab pre school, for a reason....

Just my 2 cents. Fyi, i Cheated and did update from link posted by someone, somewhere else. No issues at this stage but it seems to be rare these days to have any of the (known) issues effect me in any great way...

    Kind regards,

    Nobleskill

i think the updaters should be on the first page, while the full installs should be in the guide. That way, people who already know overcome have easy access to updates, and those that are just now learning to flash get to read the latest install guide before getting to the actual files. If you are planning to do a full wipe to move from one base to another (say 1.4.x to 1.6.x) , it wouldn't hurt to download and go over the guide again before you get access to the link. How often do you move from one base to another anyway right?
I see where alter is coming from in this respect, and i applaud him and pitbull for idiot-proofing the procedure as much as they could. If you end up with a soft brick, hit yourself in the head with it a few times, (re)read the guide , and then do it properly. If reading the guide itself makes your nose bleed, have someone else flash your tab for you.

    just my 2 centavos.

While I've specifically chosen to allow for a few hours to elapse to allow for everyone to get their voices heard before I chimed in on this particular discussion. As you know, we "thread/dev groupies" take our time to at least try consider everyone's opinion and to try to do the best to please or help everyone as much as we can... although as you know, it's sometimes a lost cause.

I do hear and do understand the power-user's gripes about the slight procedural change that alterbridge and the team is trying to put in place, to help cut through the clutter of help request, and getting proper bug reports to come through. However, before I wade in further, here's something I'd like to say: taking a hard-line stance like "The first time I have considered not using overcome rom... Was thinking its time to ditch the tab anyway, think this is the push needed to make the jump." or "screw the noobs..." doesn't really help matters. Remember, we're all noobs once too.

Please note, that the primary and overall intent when we were discussing this decision, wasn't to "treat good power users like noobs" but it was taken after many steps and discussion were made and tried to help cut through the clutter. Unfortunately, prior to this decision, most of the steps we've taken, hasn't made a dent, and when we're trying to trouble-shoot most of the important bugs being reported, having to dive through pages and pages of reports that could have been easily solved and prevented if the "noobs" (as we all so eloquently put it...) could just "not only read the darn guide but to follow it..." The Overcome thread now spans 447 pages, with over 4000+ posts as I type this, and a majority of these posts stem from these clutter. So much so, that there's even a lot of comments and suggestions coming from OTHER Power Users, such as to password protect the downloads, hiding the password in the guide, etc.

It's easy to get offended when the changes made gets slightly in the way of your instant gratification. I hate stumbling blocks too, and seriously, I do wish this step wasn't necessary. Again, I also wish everyone would take the time to read the darn guide before flashing their ROM, and I do wish that everyone would take their time reading before posting what has been asked and answered before. I'd also wish that every Overcome ROM would be bug free, and that it'll give us 1,000,000% improvement in all aspects with each release. But just like wishing for Samsung to get their act together (but I'll have to admit, they're slowly, too slowly sometimes, changing...) and that the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Galaxy Tab would drop unto our laps in the next minute, as they say, wishes, like dreams, are free... and we don't live in a perfect world.

I know it's easy to fall into the emotional trap of thinking, "Gawd, why are they punishing us good users, for the mistakes of other useless, @#$%^&* idiots that just don't want to take the effort...???", similarly, alterbridge could have easily be as emotional, and say, "Screw it...!!" too. As ever, it's always best to take a deep breath, and try looking at other people's perspective instead of just our own. Let's approach every discussion and issue with a critical, but logical stance and not be emotional about it.

There's are indeed other considerations that we had to consider as well, for the benefit of the development efforts of the Overcome ROM. If this helps cut through the aforementioned clutter, helps us identify bugs sooner (rather than having to wade through pages and pages of inane "Help!!" bug posts... to identify if there's a pattern, etc.) I'd rather a simple "less than 30seconds to probably a couple of minutes" road-block, that will also help ensure everyone is working off the same latest materials, I don't see, really, what's the fuss...

I read a good suggestion by Pawces, to put the updater on the front page and let the full ROM links be embedded in the guide. That is indeed a good suggestion, and might probably be the right balance to this endeavor. I do appreciate the suggestion, and will be bringing it up to alterbridge, since he's the only one who makes the final decision, as he's still the one who's doing all the hard work. I love constructive criticisms like that.

In essence, what I'm saying is... help us, help you too.

Cheers... and as ever, good luck and have fun.

    v1.1.3 is LIVE

    Version 1.1.3
    • Updated APN list (same as MoDaCo - user request)
    • Fixed Phone FC on missed call

Ok I think I solved the Phone FC on missed call issue. The initial phantom VM fix involved replacing a few smali files in the decompiled framework.jar with files from JMG. Instead this time I went back to the drawing board and dug through the smali files until I found the exact file that was the culprit...of course it was the one with 12,000 lines of code...in any event, I found that Samsung left out 3 lines of code that when added back to the JMI framework fixed the phantom VM issue. This fix should not affect the rest of the phone function, but I will need someone with phone capability to confirm.

Only other change this time around is the APN list is updated per user request to the same one that MoDaCo uses (a lot more APN's auto detect so some users don't need to input their info manually anymore.)

Let me know how this one goes guys!

Good progress on the Tom thus far, it works very well. However, why is the low battery graphic one of the Nexus One? It looks horrific when used in place of the stock.

Which battery graphic are you referring to? When/where does it appear?

I did what you have said but still messaging FC's :-S

Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App

Hmm...that's really strange. Have you done a full wipe by any chance since this problem has started? If not I suggest doing a backup with Titanium and installing with the full wipe installer. Then, before restoring your titanium backup, test the messaging function and see if you get FC's. Let me know how you make out.
