OK everybody, like many of you, I have run into some problems trying to do the following:
  1. root my Kindle
  2. Install a recovery image
  3. Get Google Play working

I am pleased to say I have finally succeeded. (Hooray!) In an effort to "give back" to the community, I thought I would pass along my findings.

Problem #1
I could not get the KFU to recognize (find) my Kindle. I installed the Kindle drivers via install_drivers.bat several times. I installed the Android SDK (which I had planned to do for app development anyway). I uninstalled the Samsung driver for my SGS2. I uninstalled the Samsung KIES app. I still could not get this laptop to work with KFU. My Kindle also would not mount as a USB drive. I was successful using an old Win7 PC, but it is in an inconvenient place in my house.
SOLUTION
I found some posts in this thread that suggested to connect the Kindle, then go to Device Manager and uninstall the device it has connected as (e.g. "Android ADB") with the "Delete the driver software for this device." option selected. Now disconnect your Kindle. Install the Kindle drivers (install_drivers.bat). Connect your Kindle and let Windows install the proper drivers.

Thank you for this solution. Once I did this everything work great and I was able to root my KF with no issues.

Alright I actually still have an issue, the Kindle is rooted, I have access to the Android "normal" screen via Go Launcher EX, but apparently superuser is still now working.

Any time I try to install the apps via KFU I get:

failed to copy 'apps\system\vending.apk' to '/system/app/vending.apk': Permissio
n denied
failed to copy 'apps\system\GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter.apk' to '/system/app/Googl
eCalendarSyncAdapter.apk': Permission denied
failed to copy 'apps\system\GoogleContactsSyncAdapter.apk' to '/system/app/Googl
eContactsSyncAdapter.apk': Permission denied

Now I'm being told to install the apps from recovery but can't figure out that.

EDIT: nvm figured it out! I'm still having some issues with the su but the apps were flashed from recovery just fine! I guess I'll just flash the 6.3 rooted directly from this thread http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1569298

Anyone an idea, why superuser is not installing with 0.9.5 always properly?
I had at least 2 KF where it did not happen, had to install manually.

Mine, rooted since 6.1, rooted with 0.9.5 the 6.3 without any issues.

Many many thanks for this utility, once I got the Android SDK and Java SDK set up this thing worked like a dream. The only thing that didn't work right was installing Google Play. But that's super easy to sideload with root access. Again, thank you! It took me several hours to set up my mother-in-law's Fire, once I had it down, it took all of 20 minutes to set up my wife's Fire.

Why not make it yourself, his batch file is pretty clean, if I do say so myself. Matta fact, i think i'll get to work on that one right now. I Don't use any keyboards other than swype though.

What swype keyboard do you use, the beta? and what rom? I doubt it is as simple with let's say cm9 as it is with the stock because cm9 actually gives you the option to select swype in settings. But I can double check the script once finished to see if it works well with my girls stock rooted kindle.

Drivers won't install

I can not get the Kindle Drivers to install on Win 7 x64....It just hangs on Please wait while the drivers install....I did click "Install anyway" to the security box that popped up.

I have tried restarting the computer and turning off Avast...but still hangs and I have to kill the process in task manager.

EDIT: Must be something with my primary desktop system, as the drivers installed in a second on my secondary system...

I am running stock 6.3 with market and galls installed. no root. And yes I only wanted swype because its really cool.I will take a look at the batch it shouldn't be that hard.

So..u can install the market and google apps without doing all that rooting and adb stuff......i want to root, but do not want to loose the prime videos etc....

I read about that and I thought..What the hell!!!...that's like jailbreaking the ipad and it disabling itunes...diable one of the main features on the device...what is amazon thinking...is beyond me...

Anyway, i am hoping to side load go launcher and the other android apps i am pulling off my smartphone...not sure what will work and what won't...need root if i want to block adds...grrr..

Use can use voodoo ota root keeper to temporarily unroot and it allows you to veiw prime videos. And restore the root access when you need it. You can download it in the Google play store or by searching it in this forum.

Or you can get adb working, then just use this utility to get the apps without rooting and you dont have to worry ;)

I did and i haven't regretted it a second. Play Store makes kindle fire a real powerhouse

My kindle fire is showing up as a portable device in device manager...I installed the drivers from this utility, but it wont show up as android adb..nor will the utility see adb status online...I even folled a youtube video on how to do this..but I am stuck.

I assume to connect the usb cord with the kindle on...which means it just mounts the storage drive...is there some special option or way of booting the thing in to this fast-boot mode to enable adb?

Edit: Ok..tried a different computer..I see Android ADB interface in device manger, but the utility still says adb off line....help??

EDIT: When i run the .bat as Adminstrator...it shows adb status as online, but boot status as unknown...

I have updated TWRP to 2.1 now. The next time you launch KFU it will automatically pull down the latest URL and MD5 and you will be good to go.

Enjoy! It looks like it is a MUCH nicer piece of software this time around.

I'm having the strangest occurrence. I ran KFU and selected latest TWRP recovery. It flashed fine - it even showed version 2.1.0 on the screen after flashing. I select Reboot (as instructed) and the system boots fine. However, next time I enter recovery. I'm back in TWRP 2.0.0. This has happened 3 times now.

Interesting. If I can get the wife to give me her kindle I will investigate it further. It should work no problem since its the same install process with this version of twrp, all i did was update the MD5.

If you can, try deleting the recovery folder in your KFU folder, and then try it again.

so here is what I had to do...

I found the kindle in device manager and manually installed the drivers from the kindle fire utility. (by pointing to that directory)

then I had to do a mkdir to create .android folder in my %userprofile% directory

then I created an adb_usb.ini file and pasted in the following
0x1949
0x18D1

saved it, unplugged my kindle and replugged it.

after that I was good to go and followed this thread...

http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1410766

Hope this helps someone.

All the credit goes to skourg3 and jcase on the IRC chat, just paying that help forward.

i would just like to thank this guy for helping me with cannot find file adding the ini file with hardware ids fixed my issue and was rooted with recovery and rom in minutes :)

WARNING: DO NOT use this on 2nd Generation Devices or you risk bricking your Device.

These procedures are for FIRST GENERATION Devices ONLY. In otherwords, for the ORIGINAL KF. If you proceed to use this on your 2nd Generation Device, and you BRICK it, don't complain. You have been warned.

This thread is also no longer maintained. A new Thread has been opened.

    The new Thread

    MD Moderator XDA

Hi all, some of you may have seen my utility over in the de-bricking thread. My goal at this point is to try and make lives easier for everyone I can.

So what I have done is created a script that can be used to handle a lot of common things people may want, and I will continue to add things people request that I think would be easy, and beneficial. I just wanted to make this situation easier for the average person.

You will see how the tool detects you at the default screen, and can refresh it by hitting 0 at any menu to have it refresh ADB/Fastboot and see what mode the kindle is in.

    Currently the tool does:

    • Automatic elevation to root for tool operations.
    • Full root install.
    • Auto detect current bootmode.
    • Auto Detect ADB/Fastboot Online/Offline.
    • Auto download update.zip from Amazon.
    • Auto download and install TWRP Recovery.
    • Auto download and install CWM Recovery.
    • Auto download and install FFF Bootloader.
    • Manage current bootmodes.
    • Manage Read/Write.
    • Install GoogleApps/Market/GoLauncherEX.
    • Lock/Unlock the Wallpaper from being changed.

Currently the tool comes packaged with the drivers required to operate ADB and Fastboot.

Please note: If your device can't be seen in fastboot mode, please make sure to install the drivers packaged with this, as it will show up afterwards. You can use the install_drivers.bat with the device plugged in for this.

Usage should be straight forward for the tool. If you are having issues with something, this tool has a good chance of getting you back on track. This issue was found and fixed using this post: Click me Over at Rootzwiki.

I make no claim that this tool is perfect, but I certainly will do my best to support it as long as people like it.

Here are some screen-shots of it:

    Known Tricks

    • If you end up stuck at the yellow triangle, in KF Utility select Boot Normal, wait for it to say <waiting for device> and then press and hold the power button 20 seconds until the fire turns off, then when its off turn it back on. This sometimes happens, I have yet to find a clean solution :(
    • If you end up stuck with a yellow triangle, do not EVER unplug it. Leave it plugged in. Check the windows drivers to make sure it isnt showing as "kindle" again. Fastboot is different and can cause this.

I tries that in my device manager it says unknow device with yellow mark when i go to update driver it says the latest is already installed

Alright. Let me guide you through this...
-Download the attachment I provide below and place it in somewhere you KNOW where you can find it easily. (I placed it in C:\android-sdk-windows\extras\google\usb_driver(I would recommend doing the same))
    -Go to device manager
-right click on the exclamation mark kindle.
    -Choose update driver software
-choose browse my computer for driver software
-choose let me pick from a list of devices on my computer
    -Then select have disk
    -Then select browse
-direct to where you downloaded the usb driver i attached
    -Select okay and okay

    Download here

    New version of KFU

I PM'd VashyPooh and he is no longer supporting KFU because he doesn't own a Kindle Fire anymore. So now I will be maintaining this project for now. I am going to make a new thread and release Kindle Fire Utility v0.9.7+. Here is the new thread :) I don't know what should be done with this thread though once it becomes obsolete.

VashyPooh, thank you for what you've done here you've helped me and thousands of people root, install custom firmware, and de-brick our devices. We really appreciate what you've done for us and all the hard work you've put in to this. :good:

Also, thank you for letting me update this because now your utility will be able to help even more people. :)
