To perform a NANDROID backup via cwm your phone needs to be rooted first. If you are unlocked then you can just select the root option and once its complete you can then boot into cwm and do your backup.Hi Mark,
Would you please kindly let me know what I have done wrong?

Your NANDROID will of course backup your root files but 'I think' if you restored the image and then locked your bootloader and unlocked it again (thus doing a full wipe) it may unroot the phone in the process but I have never tried it.

Yes thats the correct procedure.Hi Mark,
Thank you. I apologize for any inconvenience it may cause as I am usually more cautious when dealing with ROMs of any type.
To confirm, the correct sequence for backing up the ROM without flashing are:
1. Install Galaxy Nexus Drivers to your PC
3. UnLock your Bootloader
4. Root your phone
9. Boot to CWM Recovery without Permanently Flashing it
Would you please tell me where I can locate the back-up file?
Besides, is the superuser.apk permanently installed in the phone or do I need to install the apps seperately?
Thank you for your ongoing support.
Yes thats the correct procedure.
Which backup file are you refering to?
The root process copies superuser.apk and su binary across to your phone and then sets their correct permissions. On the next boot superuser will be installed and you will be rooted.

There is no real need to perform a factory reset before backing up.Hi Mark,
Thank you. After I have rooted the phone, the error messages have disappeared.
Before I select backup & restore under the insecure CWM, should I:
1. wipe data/factory reset?
2. wipe cache partition?
3. Advance - Wipe Dalvik Cache?
After the insecure CWM back-up is completed, what steps do I need to take to pull the file out from the phone?
Thanks.
There is no real need to perform a factory reset before backing up.
The cwm backup is saved in a date stamped folder to /sdcard/clockworkmod/backups

When you plug your phone into your pc you should be able to view the phones sd card with your Windows Explorer and copy the folder across.Hi Mark,
Thanks. This is probably my last question. Do I need a file manager, e.g. root explorer, File Expert by Geek Software Technology Inc, etc to locate the file on the phone and transfer to my computer.
Is the File Expert by Geek Software Technology Inc sufficient for an average user?
Reboot your pc and plug the usb cable in to check the serial number.
Mark.
How did you install the drivers?Doesn't do anything, no serial number is listed.
edit: It works in Android OS, but doesn't in fastboot.

Is that a total reboot into Android or just a reboot back into fastboot mode?Just to share my experience!
After unlocking your bootloader you have to boot once before you can do a CWM backup (if you don´t flash recovery but just boot it via fastboot),
otherwise there will be some errors in mounting partitions. So in my opinion you don´t have to root before doing the backup but certainly it wouldn´t be worse to root before.
Because there is mentioned nowhere (certainly places i´ve looked for) to reboot, i wanted to share with you.

If the latter is ok then I can just add a reboot into fastboot after the unlock has completed to make everything automated.
MArk.
I will relock and try it tomorrow lol nothing like testing it for yourselfdont know exactly but i think you have to boot into android, so that all data is written the right way to the partitions, after bootloader unlock where everything was wiped.
after I unlocked my bootloader I booted my nexus into android, cause I had errors when I was triing to do a nandroid via booting cwm backup via fastboot. afterwards, the backup worked well.

The kernel is usually included within a boot image when developers release it, or its released in a zip format that you flash via cwm recovery.

That is an img file which needs to be flashed directly via fastboot and not cwm.i want to flash this kernel using toolkit http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1380064
ThanksAmazing thread! This thread would probably be really helpful for newbies
Just a few suggestions:
1.)You might want to include how to flash custom kernels
and also that you can
2.)Clockwork Recovery can be instealled through Rom Manager
Nonetheless, great thread
