you can use any of the rooting tools ( links below on My Android Collections ) by USB connection with PC or just flash a CF Root kernel http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=788108 using Odin
Rooting Tools push SU into your phone through ADB via PC, you can try any, most work for i9000
For CF ROOT choose according to your ROM or the closest , will work and can be flashed with any Odin as PDA

I'm in a similar situation. Can you please explain why it would be better? I'm planning to flash aokp jelly bean once it hits a milestone.

juz put ur fone into download mode n open odin, put cf root.tar into pda without changing anything n plug in ur fone snd wait till odin say added n flash it into ur fone n reboot

Thank you so much for your reply!!!! I tried putting my phone into download mode but it cannot be detected by the computer and odin when i plug it, i tried several times.. am i doing something wrong

And u should find our modem, I can be download at last link I gave u, da modem should be on da far or zip file provided, GOOD LUCK

Well I just want to unlock my phone's network. I havent tried to root my phone coz im scared ill just mess it up. is there anyway I could do that?

you can follow the guide(below) to upgrade to 2.3.6 and then root it...that 'll be better if you are planning to flash roms..1
