This means you have modified the device, aka rooted it. Use the following instruction to get rid of the notification.

Doesn't work... it did after I did the OTA (using the instructions) but after another dozen reboots (modifying system stuff) the custom screen came back. I don't have superuser installed or busybox... Weird thing is that the status under the about screen still says official....

I got rid of the icon when I first rooted. Then I stupidly went into recovery and even though I didn't install anything it still starting showing the custom icon. I just unrooted and rebooted TWICE and the icon is gone. I will re-root when I get home and hopefully after following the instructions the icon won't come back. I have given up on the update. I don't feel like finding everything and restoring it back to stock. I will wait for the unlocked bootloader and the root injected stock files that can be loaded via Odin.

I think it has to do with recovery (speculation). I went into recovery to clear cache and it started after that (didn't put the two together till now). I thought it was weird that I got an error when clearing the cache... the custom thing is not a big deal knowing that it will go away flashing back to stock. I'm use to seeing the "unlock" from my Nexus 7 so it is kinda comforting since I know for a fact its custom... I wouldn't be on this site if I cared and didn't want custom right? lol

Update: Weird... after a few more reboots this morning it went away without doing anything.

I updated. Re-rooted. Installed SuperSU and did my typical de-bloat. No custom logo all day and then on my last reboot the CUSTOM image came back. Oh well.

As long as I can keep flashing official firmware to get updates, I'll be fine.

With respect to djrbliss, I hereby present you a slightly modified version of the original exploit:
- It includes the 'su'-binary from supersu
- Superuser.apk removed:
- Instead of installing the 'SuperUser'-app directly using ADB, it shows a message when you have to manually install it from the market.

With this new ZIP, you will not see the 'custom'-icon at all as it is done 'the first time right', or in fact, directly with SuperSU instead of SuperUser which is noticed by the software.

Hopefully it is OK to djrbliss if I post this, if not, please let me know and I'll remove it.

Enjoy!

How would you install this zip for people that are already rooted?

Well, you do not have to install the ZIP, but instead, do the following:
- Install SuperSU from the market
- Grant SuperSU root access
- When asked to update su-binary, please do
- Remove SuperUser from your device
- Reboot (I read two reboots are needed to make the icon disappear again.)

This will give you the same effect as the modified zip I provided, except that it did not install SuperUser at first but directly installs SuperSU binary (with manual SuperSU installation).

But don't we want SuperUser instead of SuperSU because it's updated?

Please define 'updated'.

Looking at the Google Play pages:
SuperUser by ChainsDD - Updated 1 July 2012
SuperSU by - Updated 3 March 2013

So SuperSU is newer, I do know there is a different version of SuperUser from Koush (ClockWorkMod) but I haven't tested it. I will try this later and if people are interested I can create a similar ZIP with the su-binary from Koush/ClockWorkMod. At this moment I do not know if it will show the 'custom'-icon with this root application/binary.

[EDIT] rogersa2k below is right; the original package contains the SuperUser from Koush/ClockWorkMod already, so that's not going to be of any help... :)

Isn't it this SuperUser.apk, or am I confused?

The version of SuperUser included in Motochopper seems to be the updated one by ClockworkMod. That's what is currently installed on my phone. So does that mean we can't get rid of the "lock" icon on bootup without removing it in favor of SuperSU?

So, I am attempting to root, and it keeps saying:

device found
pushing exploit.

It does not do anything else, it will stay on that until I close out of the program, what am I doing wrong?

A recent root exploit I published for Motorola devices, Motochopper, should do the trick for rooting the Qualcomm-based variants of the Samsung Galaxy S4, including the AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile branded models.

    Download the exploit here:
    http://vulnfactory.org/public/motochopper.zip

    Instructions:

    1. Extract the entire contents of the zip file.
    2. If you are using Windows, ensure you have installed the latest Samsung USB drivers available for your phone.
    3. Ensure USB Debugging mode is enabled on your device.
    4. Connect your device to your PC via USB.
    5. If you are using Windows, navigate to the extracted directory and execute "run.bat". If you are using Linux or OS X, navigate to the extracted directory in a terminal and execute "./run.sh".
    6. Approve the ADB connection from your PC on your device.

    Warning:
At this point, since there are no custom recoveries or stock images available, it may not be possible to repair your device should you accidentally break it. Please be aware of this before performing any modifications to your phone.

As always, future OTA updates may remove the ability to regain root access, so proceed with caution when updating. Enjoy!

debugging is on, installed usb drivers and im on Win7 64bit.

Device manager shows ADB driver installation too...

Sorry about that, just needed to update the version of ADB I was including. It should work fine now. Try downloading a fresh copy from the same link and trying again.

I've updated the instructions to mention that you will need to approve the ADB connection from your PC on the device.

I tried to send a PM to @djrbliss but he has it disabled.

CASUAL handles Windows, Linux, and Mac in a single Java JAR. you can open it up and go into the /SCRIPTS/ folder then open the SCR to see your code rewritten in CASUAL format.

The benefeit of CASUAL scripting is that it performs troubleshooting for the user

    Download http://d-h.st/64i

    33o475s.png

Anyway, i always rewrite in CASUAL format because its more useful to have a single file that works on all platforms rather than a zip file that has differences for each.

Although I love that this was found...part of me feels it should be in the other dev section...as this method isnt exactpy "original" its a methid for a different phone that just so happens to work...just my .02

Anyways as I already stated edtremly greatful...nice to have root again

Its more original than anything else that will be in this forum. djrbliss is the originating other of the exploit, and the person that located the vulnerability used.
