another edit. Sorry for this. like I said earlier. total noob here. But I must say, for only doing this for a few hours, I am getting it. Got my phone rooted and now reading and reading and reading again to see if I want to put CYANOGEN 10.1 on here or not. The nightly release worries me a bit. How often do you have to install new builds? I also see the CYAN 9.1 stable release is there to download. Thats ICS right? Is that better at the moment than the 10.1 JB nightly release? Or am I better off just leaving 2.3.6 GingerBread stock on here. That doesnt sound like fun but not bricking a 5 day old $300 phone would be nice!

Anyway to make this work with Kies?

You don't have to update the nightlies, but CM10.1 still has bugs. There is a stable build for CM10, but you need to flash CM10.1 first. By flashing CM10.1 you are making your phone compatible with all i777 ROMs. So you can then go to the i777 development section and find a ROM that may be more suited to what you want.

I was not able to make mine work with kies.
As for roms i am using shostock3 ver2.5.1 and it is basicly the jellybean 4.1.2 tricked out somewhat. I was not crazy about cm10.1. It was stable but the visual appearance was not very good so i tried this one. I think mr cook uses shostock3 too.

Take your time with this and you will see using cwm recovery is actually very easy once you understand how its set up. Simple as 1,2,3 :)

EDIT: Dont forget to make a back up in cwm before you start changing ur rom

I am also somewhat of a noob to all of this, but this community is full of people that are willing to help us out. The first rom I tried out was CM10.1. There is nothing wrong with it, but after moving to SHOstock3 with the siyah kernel I have been very happy with my phone. I've been putting off upgrading to the newest version of SHOstock3 simply because I'm not looking forward to a full factory reset. My recommendation to anyone new to this is read, read, and read some more, then ask someone that has been around a while to make sure you understand the proper methods.

So it's booting the ROM. It may be a bad download. It could be something in that release, I haven't updated yet I'm still on 2.1 . There weren't any changes to recovery so that CWM is compatible, hopefully you're using the PhilZ CWM. I would try the 2.5.1 released earlier if you still get bootloop, try flashing the Siyah kernel and see if that changes it.

I didn't have PhilZ CWM, so I got that first and then flashed Siyah kernel and Siyah recovery. I'm on SHOstock3 2.1 now with no problems at all (so far)! Thanks for your help mr-cook, razen_kain and angelj73!

So basically I MUST install CM10.1 because it turns my SGH-S959G in to a SGH-i777 in which I can install ShoStock3 or any other custom ROM I want on top of CM10.1 the same way I installed the original ROOT.zip file?

I would much rather have official ICS or JB but I believe JB isnt available yet for the i777.... just the I9100, correct? I am thinking I am going CM10.1 or ShoStock3 though. Watched YouTube videos and I like them both. Any thoughts or is there a post that compares the 2?

And I install CM10.1 and the gapps.zip the same way I installed the original ROOT.zip correct? Except I gotta factory reset and wipe cache first? Which cache gets wiped? Is it this fom the OP "-wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, select -advanced, -wipe dalvik cache?"

You wipe cache and dalvik cache.
Install just like the root zip.
There's no official JellyBean and possibly never will be for i777, plus official sucks.
Official ICS has the super brick bug so not recommended.
You should be able to install SHOstock3 from stock as is it doesn't have the assert checks like some ROMs do.
If you're going to use SHOstock3 I recommend flashing the PhilZ CWM from the OP here first, as it has extra features available for that ROM.

Last night I was in class browsing fb. Everything was honky dory. Once class let out I pulled my phone out from my pocket and my data connection was gone. Has been ever since. Im running CM9.1 which has suddenly become buggy with the notification bar occassionally not displaying anything, no widgets or notifications. Ive been runnning CM9.1 for a few weeks now without issue. Just curious is my Auto-refill might have anything to do with this? It was set to refill 02/12/13 but my data disappeared yesterday.

Bricked it....

Installed ShoStock3 and the Philz zip was running fine. Then installed the Silyah kernel and brick. I guess Silyah isnt for ShoStock3? Only thing that happens is the 4 touch screen buttons light up. Any help?

Which Siyah kernel did you install?

Can you boot into recovery or download mode?

A lot of people here including myself are running aj's Siyah kernel without issue.

Straight Talk has no idea what ROM you have on your phone. It sounds like it's ROM related. Try clearing the cache and dalvik cache. If that doesn't help try re-flashing the ROM.

Silyah 4.3.3 . as soon as i did it it bricked.

I can get into download mode. cant get into recovery

And when do I have to STOP typing in verification code . Driving me carzy!

That kernel isn't for JellyBean. You need this one- http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?p=36993409

You need to follow the factory firmware in case of soft brick in the OP. If you can only get into dl mode.

Recovery is volume up + volume down + power button hold until you see CWM. No usb plugged in. Some people miss that. Try recovery again as it would be easier to re-install SHOstock3 or restore a backup from CWM.

Don't know what verification code you're talking about.

and the correct Silyah Kernel is the one for Samsung Jelly Bean users. Siyah-i777 v7.9b-S <--- This one?

Can I flash more than one zip before I reboot? Basically install ShoStock3, PhilZ zip and Silyah Kernel without rebooting or is that a NO? I searched for this with no luck.

I learned alot the last 3 days. mr cook....You are awesome. Cant thank you enough! THANK YOU !!!

people should just take it slow if your new to this instead of trying to throw everything in at once and end up getting in way over your heads. start off with a rom and get to know it. if its stable enough for you then mess with the kernel if you`d like. doing everything at once just leads to a bunch of questions that have probably been answered had you taken the time to read.

that being said if youre already in recovery factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik. you should already have philz recovery since you flashed it previously. go ahead and flash shostock and reboot. if you still think you know what youre doing then do the kernel stuff at your own risk.

    REMOVING THE YELLOW TRIANGLE

    GINGERBREAD ONLY! (Root Required)
    - Extract the stock zImage from the factory firmware at the top of this page (I used 7zip, and needed to extract it twice to get it apart).
    - Put the stock zImage on the root (not in a folder) of your internal SD card. You can do this through the usb, adb push (adb push- Copy and paste the zImage into your folder with adb, connect your phone with usb, then command- adb push zImage /sdcard/zImage), whatever method you like.
    - Now using adb shell, or terminal emulator found in the market (if you don't' have adb ask GOOGLE) issue the command (capitilazation and spacing matter):

    $ adb shell
    $ su
    # dd if=/sdcard/zImage of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5

This must be done as #, if you have a $ enter command: su
You must already be rooted for this to work. To switch to a different kernel afterwards you can use the same method, or CWM without getting the yellow triangle again or increasing the flash counter. As long as you flash internally, if you use Odin or Heimdall to flash anything thats not stock it will come back.

REMOVING YELLOW TRIANGLE ICS AND ABOVE!
-If running ICS or above you can use triangle away found here- http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?p=22462960

Flashing other versions of CWM with adb (Root Required)

The op needs to be updated with this'd information...

The latest cwm is only for kitkat ROMs, that's cm 11+. Of you want to go with jelly bean ROMs like the one you're trying to use, you need to use cwm 6.0.2.7 it's older but JB won't flash on the newer ones. There are a few different versions but any will work as long add it's philZ, AJK, or 6.0.2.7

Since you already have cwm installed you can just DL the zips and flash them in recovery then reboot "recovery" and it will be complete. No need for Odin now. Try that and get back to us

I think I'm just going to replace CWM with the new TWRP in the op. It seems to be easy more compatible. Plus I like it better.

EDIT: Done. Op updated to install TWRP with Odin to be more compatible.

since this post is in AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777 section...i thought it might be compatible. i even saw a lot of ROM posts where they says its compatible with i777 and sgh s959g....so i was in doubt and had to ask.....glad to know its not compatible...thx....

I thought it was...a lot of the ROMs I search are based on the i777 builds just have to make sure you have the correct radio installed.....I've rooted mine and used several different ROMs just based off of this thread. Searching the thread with the search tool will yield massive results. See post#5 from the OP that's a fairly good clue.

Ok ok ok wait... Let's clear up some confusion. The one and only difference between the 959g and the i777 is that the 959g has its recovery on a separate partition by itself, whereas the i777 has kernel and recovery on the same partition. The 959g can use any ROM or kernel built for the i777 no problem. But if you want a different recovery on 959g you must use one of the zips from the op or Odin. If you had an i777 and you flash a new kernel it will also install a new recovery as it will be packaged in the zip. If you flash the same kernel on the 959g, your kernel will change but recovery remains untouched since it is on a different partition. That is the one and only difference between the two. Happy flashing :D
