Greetings From South Coast UK

Hello. I've been using XDA, on and off for about 5 years now, ever since I rooted by Galaxy S4 Mini. Since then I've rooted several Samsung and Motorola phones and used lineage OS extensively. I am currently trying to root a Sony Xperia X compact, which is proving to be very challenging, to say the least.
I'm looking forward to being part of the community.

Hi- my name is Nathan. I've actually been a large fan of xda developers for several years. I have the galaxy on5 SM-G55OT1 metropcs which with your help rooted about a year ago. So thank you for that. When it comes to anything technical with my phone, this is always the first site I come to. It will always give me an honest answer about any changes that may be possible or not possible to my phone, which I know is extremely hard to find at times. With new phones coming out every 7-8 months, its hard to look at the past when all we see is the future.

Hi, lurker's first intro on this forum.

Ive been using xda ever since my first phone (Galaxy Ace), and it has been incredibly useful for rooting and finding great apps to use.

I'm also posting here because there's the 10 posts before being allowed to post external links that I need to get by so I can ask for support with an LG phone, and I havent posted enough on here yet loll.

Just sayin' "Hi", and a new device effort, Anki Vector, which is a robot

Hi,

my name is Melanie and I'm one of the people spearheading the investigation to root the Anki Vector.

The reason I came here is that the Vector, although he looks like a cute little robot, actually is built on smart phone tech and runs an Android kernel.

Vector has a Qualcomm APQ8009 (Snapdragon 212) CPU, paired with a combination ram/flash, Kingston 04EMCP04-NL3DM627. It boots Linux version 3.18.66-perf via an Android bootloader.

There are other components, including a secondary processor, but these are out of scope for this forum. I am mostly the hardware person in this endeavour, at least until we can actually get into him. Once there, I can take the software further, but I'm missing the vital bits of knowledge needed to get from here to there.

"Here" is that I have managed to access the system using a serial port that could be found via solder pads on the PCB, we have captured multiple boot logs this way. Sadly, there is no getty.
I have also managed to solder a USB port and to find the trace that controls one of the Snapdragon's boot control pins. I have been able to put the robot into EDL (QDLoader) 9008 mode.
I have then attempted to connect with various pieces of software, but the furthest I got was with MiracleBox, which told me a CPUID and then told me that that ID is unrecognised.

We're currently trying to raise funds to buy a BGA rework system capable of desoldering the flash, as we're getting desperate to obtain a firmware image.

So, that's what I do, I hack and I know things. Sadly not the ones I need to know now.

I have money to buy any needed tools, but there is a thicket of hacks, cracks and disinformation while hard info is rarer than hen's teeth. I really don't wish to spend £1000s on the wrong stuff. That is where I'm stuck.

Good luck.

I still think this is a topic that rather belongs in the developer section. Normal users could neither profit nor contribute to a hardware hacking effort, I believe.

However, that aside, I can't really get people involved if I can't post links to our research material, findings, pictures, etc. How can I go about that?

Thanks,

- Melanie

My suggestion is to post in
https://xdaforums.com/android/general

After 10 posts you can post links and images.
If there's any interest in your project you will have your posts easily.
Then you can request that your thread be moved to a Developer section.

Melanie, allow me to add to @sd_shadow suggestions. Maybe this forum "Hardware Hacking General" suits your requirements?
And regarding links until you are allowed to insert them yourself, there are quite a few possibilities:

  • https ://xdaforums.com/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=79982149 (i.e. just insert a space somewhere that it isn't recognised as a link. Your interested users will know how to deal with such a "link".
  • Just use the report functionality to alert the moderators' team and request to get a link inserted. We are here to support and assist and are very happy to do so.
  • Create your thread, use the report funtion and request that the post count limit is lifted for you with some explanations why (in your case just in reference to your latest posts in this thread and the other one). It will certainly be considered, and our admin's have the possibility to just "donate" the required number of posts to you.
  • ...
I think just commence with what you want to do and see if there's interest, responses and feedback. If there is, I don't know.

Hello There

Hi!

I have knowledge about somethings, and ignorance of others. I would like to contribute in a helpful way. How can I find people who want to know things I might be able to help them with?

Well if you are referring to Andriod development, then jump into the Q&A's sections and whatever your device is, those forums.

But if you referring to something else, try Facebook.

@Oswald Boelcke , or any other Senior Mod if you're quick enough 😂, as you edited the OP of the old New User Guide perhaps a link to the new one could be added to the top of the OP there? There probably won't be too many people who come across that thread first but it's happened here at least
Mission accomplished! May I politely ask to check if I missed something?

Hi all, reading the how to guide. Love the site, been lurking for a few years on and off for various things also FYI if any mod for some reason and is bored outta their mind you get a 404 on the forum rules link in the getting started guide and the google suggestion for site searching is your old link i.e xda-developer not xdaforums, but yeah its a meh. Thanks for the site and info anyone else reading this.
A slight downside of going through the site revamp 4 years ago is that, like in this instance, a lot of links in the old threads don't work and makes some of the information outdated. Just incase you haven't came across it yet, this is the new and updated new user guide - How To Navigate The XDA Forum.

    Welcome!!!

On the behalf of everyone here at XDA-Developers.com, we would like to welcome you to our forum. We are the world’s leading mobile development forum and now that you have joined, you will be among the population with the world’s most talented mobile developers. Our mantra is a simple one. We are “a development forum by developers, for developers." XDA is a place where many come to help fellow members and further development on almost every mobile device imaginable. Our forum has amassed a great wealth of knowledge and it is now at your fingertips. This thread is a starting place for all new members, such as yourself. Please take a moment to introduce yourself to us in the thread. Let us know who you are, tell us a little bit about yourself, how you became interested in mobile development and hacking, as well as how you found XDA.

Please take a look at the links below. We have added some valuable information that will help guide you to success on XDA.

First and foremost, when it comes to success on XDA, we expect all members, both new and old, to know, understand, and follow all of the rules and policies set forth by the forum administrators. You can review the rules in the link below. These rules are also pinned at the top of every forum page as an announcement.

We understand that being new to this forum can be a little overwhelming. Our very own Senior Moderator, mikef, has taken the time to write a very extensive guide that covers just about everything you need to know when starting off here at XDA. We suggest you take some time and read through this guide as it will answer most, if not all of the questions that you may have as a new member.

Next you will probably notice that there is a restriction set on all new members for posting in the development sections here on XDA. Once you have posted 10 times, this restriction will be lifted. This isn't to punish new members, but to give all new members a chance to understand how XDA works before one is allowed to post in those sections. Please note that we do require a new members' first 10 posts to be constructive and helpful. Any spamming to avert this restriction will lead to posts being deleted. For a more in-depth explanation of why this rule exists, please follow the link.

Last but not least, there may be times when you need assistance from someone on the XDA staff. Our staff is always here, 24 hours a day, to assist you with anything that you may need regarding the forum itself. However, please keep in mind that our staff is not here to answer questions about issues that you may be having with your device. We are here solely for issues within the forum itself that may need to be addressed. If you come across an issue with the forum, the easiest way to get our attention is by reporting a post.

We wish you luck with all of your endeavors on XDA. Your success here is up to you, but we hope this starting place helps set you on the path to that success. XDA welcomes you with open arms and we thank you for joining our community.

    Enjoy your stay!

Mod note: The purpose of this thread is to introduce yourselves. Tell us who you are and why you came to XDA. DO NOT use this thread as a means to boost your post count. If this happens, your posts will be deleted without warning.
