im not really seeing any current info on it

I've been asking and looking for the same thing. Doesn't appear to be. And it seems only one or two smart people are working to find a way to do this.
Sadly, it seems getting things fully rooted, unlocked and installing a custom recovery might just be a wish. I already bricked one device.

Yes....

Yes... the saferoot method works just fine on the most recent release (MI1)

do NOT try to bootloader unlock though. They patched the insecure aboot.img stuff so you cant do that anymore. If you try you will hard brick.
