Although it's already been a while and so it's no news anymore, I *had* to post anyway ;)

4EXT Recovery Touch 1.0.0.4 RC1 has been released, after a very long testing period, where no "real" bugs have been discovered.

It's the fastest 4EXT Recovery ever :)

And got some new interesting features:

  • A lot faster than any previous release
  • Hide useless directories from the "install from sdcard" menu
  • New configuration setting to save space on your sd card by excluding /cache from any backup you create
(recovery will then format /cache on restore)
  • New configuration setting to save even more space by also excluding dalvik-cache from any backups you create
  • When you restore a backup and the md5sum check fails, recovery will print a warning and offer an option to restore the backup anyway.
  • Enables themes to be installed to your sdcard instead of to /system
  • Enables you to set your time zone for recovery to a fixed value, which is now the recommended setting.
Otherwise recovery needs to autodetect your time zone on boot, which takes time and requires an additional mount.
When you flash or download the latest recovery via the App it will ask you if you want it to configure that setting for you automatically (set the time zone to the same one as your rom is using at the moment)
  • Enables custom tune2fs parameters to be configures for sd-ext.
Recovery will then use your parameters whenever it restores a backup or formats a partition
  • Desire-S HBOOT 2.x specific configuration settings

The 4EXT Apps also got new features. Some of them:

  • New recovery status: "testing"

  • Any new release of recovery will now get a "testing" status and a build number for the first few days after release.
While the recovery is flagged as "testing" and bugs are found during that period, or some enhancements are made, the build number will increase and you would get an update notification (if you enabled notifications)

  • Flashing recovery:

  • The app will now fix up your configs in greater detail when you flash a new recovery version.
  • It will also make sure it's correctly set up and that any theme for 4EXT Recovery Classic is uninstalled when you flash a Touch version.
  • If no time zone is set and you flash a recovery version that supports that setting, it will ask you if you want to set it up automatically.

  • Notifications:

  • You can now enable notifications to stay informed about news or updates to your currently installed recovery version.
This is very useful in case critical bugs have been found for your version or there's an update.
This does not create any permanent background processes wasting resources. A check takes 2-10 seconds after which the process kills itself.

  • Themes:

  • Install themes directly from inside the app.
  • The app will make sure that the theme is compatible with your device and refuse the installation if it is not.
  • Configure a setting to put themes onto your sdcard instead of /system

  • Recovery settings:

  • Manage all new settings:
  • exclude cache
  • exclude dalvik
  • set time zone
  • adjust haptic feedback strength
  • Enable hide useless directories
  • Set your custom sd-ext tune2fs parameters
  • Desire-S specific HBOOT 2.x settings

  • Backups:

  • Displays backup type (yaffs or tar) and whether the backup includes ext3 or ext4 partitions or both for each backup
  • Allows you to convert backups between ext3 and ext4

  • General:

  • The app will now also work on roms using cache2sd/m2sd et.c.
  • Pressing the back key twice on the main menu will effectively close and remove the app from memory.
  • Added great icons, created by craacK :) Thanks a lot mate :)
  • Hide useless directories from file browsers inside the app
  • After you queued all actions to be carried out by recovery, you will get an overview over everything you selected.
  • Safe reboot by unmounting external storage before.

  • Recovery API for external scripts or apps:

  • You can now quite easily use both (free and paid) apps as a backend to recovery.
  • An example demonstrating usage for apps and shell scripts is available for download

  • Complete changelog is available on 4ext.net

I have flashed just about every ROM I can find on my phone and all I can think about is why can't the ROM's work as good as this Recovery? Super smooth and never a problem hands down the best.

Had a question, I wanted to try 4EXT because I heard such good things about it but was wondering if for some reason I don't like it or it doesn't play well with my phone would I be able to go back to CWM? IF so do I just download ROM Manager and instal CWM from that or some other process?

Yes, you would just flash CWM over 4EXT. Use the ROM Manager app and install it like you said. :)

You should be able to flash CWM from ROM Manager, no problem. You won't want to go back, though :)

And backups are compatible between CWM and 4ext.

First time using this. Much better than CWM Touch, even though they also did a good job with it.

Thank you!

Awesome

This updater is sweeeet. Movie over CWM, i love the fact you can change the theme on it too. I'll be definitely buying this, i love the hdd feature, it works great for not having to mess with the phone when its actually on! Well in the GUI rom i mean :D. *drools* Im stickin with this. But whats the dif with the control section than the updater?? Will i "have" to buy in 3 days after the expiration time?? Or can i still use this?

    • brand new user interface: "4EXT UI"
    • touchscreen only
    • extremely fast
    • much more useful features than the already feature-packed 4EXT Recovery Classic v2.2.7 RC5 (see 2nd post)
    • optionally save space by configuring recovery to exclude /cache from backups
    • you can configure recovery to save even more space by excluding dalvik-cache from backups
    • calculates real space needed to complete a backup to save you from troubles
    • detects your local time zone
    • -> correct time is used for backups you start from within recovery
    • allows you to change md5sum check behaviour
    • displays and updates your current battery level in real time
    • scrollable texthistory (drag down the statusbar)
    • built-in interactivity (yes/no questions) for updater-scripts
    • built-in screenshot functionality
    • extensive theming capabilities!
    • nearly ALL YOU SEE is changeable.
    • "worker bar": create your own custom animations, there are (nearly) no limits! Use any shapes/sizes/animations et.c.
    • extra low cpu needed for that: absolutely no negative impact on backup/restore speed.
    • async UI rendering for optimal performance for the "heavy tasks" like backup/restore
    • backups even faster than with usual recoveries.
    • .. explore the new interface to see more ;)
    • includes all features of 4EXT Recovery Classic

    INFO:

    For App and Rom devs:

Make use of the Recovery Interface Api provided by the (free and paid) 4EXT Recovery Apps to push updates/mods/addons for auto installation.
Very easy to use and to integrate into Apps or even shell scripts.

    Please check 3rd post.

Info regarding 4EXT Recovery Touch and its yesno feature, or any interactive installer scripts you might already use, please see 3rd post.

    Themes for 4EXT Recovery Touch:

    Download

    • This ensures that your downloads are ok by automatically verifying md5sums and that known issues and changelogs are easily accessible
    • When you install or download a recovery via the app it makes sure that your recovery config is correctly set up.
    • It allows to automatically setup your time zone for recovery.
    • You can use it to get notified about updates regarding your recovery version
    • You can configure it to get notified in case any critical bugs have been discovered of the recovery version you currently have installed.
    • It allows me to update known issues/changelogs immediately and to quickly pull a newly released version if there were reports about critical bugs
    • You can also use it to just download a recovery.zip containing the image. The download will be automatically verified for correct md5sums!

By default the app also saves the recovery.img you flash on your sdcard,
so you can use it to flash the recovery via fastboot in case you need to do that one day.

If you somehow lost those files, there's a direct download for a version you can flash via fastboot.

    4EXT Recovery Control

For a list of its many features, visit www.4ext.net

    Some examples :
    • Very easy to use, but also includes an extensive set of features available via "advanced mode"
    • Comfortable configure all settings of recovery
    • Calculate the space needed to create a new full or advanced backup

So you can make sure the backup will succeed before even rebooting into recovery.
Advanced Backups: While you are selecting / deselecting partitions, it will display and update the currently needed space to complete that custom backup set.
    • Identifies and adds your romname so you don't need to type so much when chosing a meaningful name for your backup
    • When you restore a backup, the app does the md5sum check instead of the recovery
This ensures that you know whether the restore process will succeed before even rebooting into recovery
    • Flash as many zip files you want in one go
    • Automatically calculate and display the md5sums of all zip files you are going to flash
    • Check your backups' health to ensure they will restore later when you need them, by verifying their md5sums!
    • Optionally, but highly not recommended:
If md5sums don't match but you really need that backup badly, you might want to restore it anyway.
You can you this app to fix the md5sums of a given backup
    • As an example, the following is possible to do in just one session:
Restore a backup, set to create a backup / advanced backup before the restore,
format all partitions with a file system of your choice before the restore process starts,
flash additional zip files afterwards, fix permissions and select to stay inside recovery or to reboot automatically once all actions are complete.
    • Much, much more! See www.4ext.net :)

Big thanks to craacK for a lot of great icons! :)

RC3 fixing all known issues (most of them related to other devices) is now available!
    8
    Everyone please upgrade to rc2.

A Bug has been found in rc1 that affected automatic actions initiated via Recovery Control when the checkbox to "stay inside recovery" was checked.
Thanks very much to apx for reporting!

After everything was complete, recovery did not boot the userinterface / menu.

    Sorry for the trouble.
RC1 was in testing for long enough. I did the mistake of changing one line of code before I uploaded the final RC1.
    7
Big thanks to ilostchild, Stlouie65, Invasion2, tw39515 and Jaibar who have been testing any recovery images I threw at them for hours, many, many hours and days, it looks like the mytouch 4G specific problem now finally gone.

This is no "official" release, because this is the code for the next update and 1-2 features I'd like to have in the next version are still missing, but nonetheless this is the best v1.0.0.3 yet (I'm not aware of any issues and it's a lot faster than any previous version).

It should be confirmed by some more users that the issue where the display blacklight might turn off in the middle of a recovery session is really gone.

    Download: www.4ext.net/PD15IMG.zip
(copy to /sdcard, boot into bootloader and let it flash).

    md5sum: e815071b1e572ee19e0bb82865a15f3c

    Please report back ;)

Edit: should you still encounter this display turning blank issue (which is very unlikely), then please don't pull the battery immediately. Recovery is running, it's just the display.
So if you are in the middle of a backup or restore operation, wait some minutes so you can make sure the process is finished before you do that!
